6. Lap-Band Surgery Procedure The surgeon makes a small incision into the abdomen, through which he inserts the gastric band. He then maneuvers the band into place (around the upper part of the stomach). The band contains an inflatable tube that the surgeon fills with saline solution. The tube expands and constricts the gastric band, which in turn constricts the stomach. Finally, the surgeon completes the procedure by suturing the incisions closed.
