Vietnam Vietnam is a communist country in Southeast Asia with a population of about 80 million. Vietnam was divided to two different parts called South Vietnam and North Vietnam. South was against Communism and North supported Communism.
Against Communist Vs Communist Against CommunistCommunist United States Soviet Union South Vietnam North Vietnam South Korea North Korea Australia Khmer Rouge New Zealand Viet Cong
Vietnam War The Vietnam War was the second phase of fighting in Vietnam. The war was mainly a struggle between the South Vietnamese army and Communist trained known as the Viet Cong. The First US troops entered in March 1965. North Vietnam and US did most of the fighting until 1969. The United States also started withdrawing troops. A cease-fire was also arranged in early 1973. The war finally ended in April 30 1965, when South surrendered to the North.
How did it start? The Vietnam War started because American president Eisenhower didn’t want communism to spread throughout the world and to America. Also, the US feared that all of Southeast Asia might fall to communism (domino theory). Thus, US created “containment”. The French had also been fighting.
Domino Theory -Domino theory was set up by the United States -Was a foreign Policy during 1950s to 1980s -Domino theory is a theory that if one nation comes under Communist control then the neighboring country will also come under Communist control -United States is scared that if Vietnam follows and turn into Communism then other countries surrounding them will also follow the same influence.
Battle of Dien Bien Phu Started on March 13, 1954 and ended May 7th 1955.. Battle between France and Viet Minh. The French lost that influenced the negotiations over the future of Indochina at Geneva. Made France leave Vietnam Battle began when French forces occupied Viet Minh in attempt to cut out nationalist supplies into Laos
How did the war end? The war ended on 30 April, 1975, with the fall of Saigon (which was renamed Ho Chi Minh City later onwards). Troops of the South, who had no leaders remaining they had fled already knowing defeat was determined surrendered with little fight. The rest of the army collapsed with the loss of the city. Also, American people were unhappy why US went to deal with the fighting even though it was not their problem.
Gulf of Tonkin Name given to two separate incidents involving the North Vietnam and United States. USA used this incident in order to get involvedinto the Vietnam war. US claimed that the North Vietnam attack the Gulf of Tonkin. Later onwards, we came to know that this wasn’t true. The North Vietnam didn’t actually attack Gulf of Tonkin , US just make up this rumor up to be involved.
French Indo China At the end of WW2, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos all were under French colony. This war lasted about 9 years. The war began in 1945 when Ho Chi Minh signed a Declaration of Independence stating that Vietnam would be free of both French and American influence. Most of the fighting took place in Tonkin, Northern Vietnam. The Viet Minh was the victorious side and also French depart from Indochina.
Source Analysis A napalm strike erupts in a fireball near U.S. troops on patrol in South Vietnam in 1966 during the Vietnam War.
After the War Vietnam country had been totally destroyed. They are trying to rebuild and get their country back to normal. They are also trying to share a good understanding with the US. Rename their capital city to Ho chin Minh. South Vietnam and North Vietnam rejoined.
