Week 3 DQs
DQ 1
Answer by Day 3
Write a 200 word response to the following questions:
· What is a packet? What is packet switching?
· How would you explain the concept of packet switching?
· What are the advantages and disadvantages of packet switching over circuit switching?
Answer:
What is a packet?
A packet is a unit of data and is the most common way to route information from the origin to the destination through the web. A packet has three main sections namely:
- Header
- Payload
- Footer
Header. It tells about the information about the data contained in the payload. Examples
of information contained in the header are the length of the packet, packet number, the
source and destination IP address..
Payload. It contains all the data that needs to be transmitted. Examples of payload are text, image and sound files.
Footer. It contains the data that signifies the end of the packet and no other information will

Answer:
What is a packet?
A packet is a unit of data and is the most common way to route information from
the origin to the destination through the web. A packet has three main sections
namely:
- Header
- Payload
- Footer
Header. It tells about the information about the data contained in the payload.
Examples
of information contained in the header are the length of the packet, packet
number, the
source and destination IP address..
Payload. It contains all the data that needs to be transmitted. Examples of payload
are text, image and sound files.
Footer. It contains the data that signifies the end of the packet and no other
information will be received from that same packet.
What is packet switching?
3. Packet switching is the method in networking communications that divides and
groups all the transmitted data into blocks called packets. Although the original
data is being divided into chunks, they can still be grouped together and convey the
same information as the original one. This is because of the characteristics of a
packet that it has it destination IP address in its header. So whatever happens, the
chunks of data will still meet at the same destination.
How would you explain the concept of packet switching?
In simple terms, the whole concept behind Packet Switching is providing the best
way to do more yet consumes less. Packet Switching simply does multi-tasking
along the wire. This is because it gives the same network wire the ability to route
multiple communication packets over the same network wire at a lower overhead.
This will make the network more flexible and provide better throughput.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of packet switching over circuit
switching?
Packet Switching:
Advantages:
- Maximizes the available bandwidth
- Provides better security
- Unaffected Line outage
Disadvantages:
- Data can get lost and become corrupted once packet is sent
- Not advisable for streaming media
- Can create bottleneck which causes network delay
Circuit Switching:
Advantages:
4. - Circuit is dedicated once switched
- Full use of bandwidth
- Best quality of service
Disadvantages:
- Long circuit setup time
- Designed for voice traffic but not good for data traffic
- Prone to network crash due to high volume
