Pechakucha
http://mrswooller.wordpress.com/
@catwooller
Ever felt that you don’t know your
students very well as individuals.
Is there a way to get to know your
students more?
I teach Health and PE – 3 lessons over a six
day cycle.
My Solution:
Modified
Pechakucha
Pechakucha’s are a style of
presenting. Formally they are 20
slides each shown for 20 seconds.
Modify it to suit your needs.
You can stipulate length of time for slides or not.
You can change the length of the presentation.
Have verbal or non verbal elements.
Modified Pechakucha’s
With my form class.
In term two.
My first use was 2012.
My second use was 2013
with BYOD class
With my health class. Due to
changes in our timetabling
system.
In term two.
First I presented my own Pechakucha to the class.
To showcase what I wanted students to create and
how I wanted them to present.
Positive role modelling.
Built confidence as it was a basic presentation.
How I did it.
CREATE A PRESENTATION ABOUT
YOURSELF.
Goal of your presentation: to share things about
yourself, that others in your class may not know about
you so that they can get to know you.
My Student Guidelines
2-3 minutes only
Not a huge homework task.
Seems easier to complete by having a short time limit.
Time Limit
Photos and/or writing about:
Your family
Your siblings
Your childhood
Traveling you might have done
hobbies and interests
career goal
Other future aspirations
Something quirky/funny about themselves
Give them ideas of what they could
include..
I encourage the girls to talk through their presentation. E.g.
explain who people in their photo’s are etc.
I don’t require them to write it down like a formal speech
but to talk in a more open and in relaxed way.
To give opportunities to practice public speaking in a non
threatening and non assessed environment.
To Speak or Not to Speak
That is the question!!!
You could very easily take the verbal aspect out to
work on other skills e.g. movie production etc
Or
Limit how much verbal is required throughout to help
those students who struggle with public speaking.
To Speak or Not to Speak
That is the question!!!
I don’t have time in my programme
to use my lessons for this???
Computer rooms are often available
during form times…
Computer Access????
My form class spent a week in a computer lab in form
time.
I helped those students who had never done this
before.
My focus was not on amazing presentations on ppoint,
but rather getting to know each other.
What I did…
Each morning or every couple of days we would have 1-2
students present.
This spread it out across a term.
Have a general plan of when each student is presenting
but be prepared to change when students are absent.
Rule: All students should be ready to present at any time.
Anyone can ask the student questions at the end.
Presenting Them
Stipulate what programme you want students to use. Ppoint is good as
most people or schools have it.
Get them to email it to you by a due date. Then you have it saved.
Be prepared to offer help when they require it.
Encourage students experienced with the program to go beyond the
basics of putting words on a page.
A great opportunity for experienced students to lead those less
experienced in an informal setting.
Be prepared to take your laptop to form times for the presentations.
Tips for use with
Non BYOD classes
Stipulate what program you want them to use.
Think through when they are going to present them.
Ensure you have the right equipment to connect to the
projector e.g. ipad 4 adaptor is different to ipad 3!!!
Get them emailed to you
Some Tips for use with BYOD classes.
Students didn’t find it a major task to complete and
therefor were more motivated.
Some students had never used ppoint before(I am at
secondary school), they enjoyed having the
opportunity to learn to use it without it being
assessed.
My Findings…..
Students shared far more than I expected (in a good way).
I really enjoyed students having the confidence to share
their hobbies and interests without being judged.
Students loved me and others asking questions about
some of their experiences and interests at the end.
The students would remind me about the presentations
rather than me forcing them!
