WHAT TO CONSIDER AS WE DEVELOP A
        VISION AND A PLAN

 Campus vs Separate Schools
 Location
 Community Use Areas
 Teaching Environment
    •Ventilation and thermal Comfort
    •Day-lighting and Acoustics
    •Color and Proper Furnishings
    •Outdoor Connections
    •Collaboration Spaces
    •And, yes . . . .
               Play Areas!

                 SCHOOLS MUST EVOLVE

The three R’s are still CRITICAL for each student to master . . . just to survive

•Reading
•Writing
•Arithmetic

BUT, the students that SUCCEED and
THRIVE are:

•Critical thinkers
•Nimble communicators
•Creative problem solvers
•Collaborators
•And most of all . . .
            self-confident

                               COOS BAY CITY COUNCIL
COOS BAY SCHOOL DISTRICT – FACILITIES PLANNING

GOOD VENTILATION & THERMAL COMFORT

The lack of proper ventilation can impair student
performance, both directly and indirectly. Discomfort
and distraction when they’re cold or hot also effects
learning.

 DAY-LIGHTING
THE RIGHT KIND, THE RIGHT AMOUNT

Well-designed natural lighting

•Reduces the need for electric light
•Contributes to health, productivity, and attitude
•Raises test scores
•Reduces sick days

ACOUSTICS & COLOR
Opportunities are
   not limited to
         SOUND
 AMPLIFICATION
         but also
          NOISE
    REDUCTION

                                       Color’s effects
                                        • Confidence, security and safety
                                        • Sense of well-being
                                        • Independent use
                                        • Behavior & concentration
                                        • School pride

FURNITURE, TECHNOLOGY &
CLASSROOM FUNCTION
Furniture has a direct impact on space goals

•Large group learning & peer-to-peer

•Use small number of standard components that can be
                                                           Sometimes informal is best
re-arranged in different formats
                                                               Sometimes nothing at all
•Mobile screening pieces
•More storage – less clutter
Technology has many applications
•Use a combination of informal wireless connectivity
with lab settings – students learn and study differently
