Native to: Coastal ranges and Sierra Nevadas from Mexico to N. CA; an important component of
many chaparral, coastal sage, and oak (Quercus spp.) woodlands of southern California. Usually
grows on dry rocky or sandy slopes, at low to mid-elevations .

Erect evergreen shrub. Stems stout, spine-tipped, with gray bark. Leaves oval-shaped, gray-green.
Growth characteristics:
Blooms in spring (Apr-June). Flowers are typical for Ceanothus – many small,
sweet-scented flowers in tight clusters. Flower color usually pale blue to white. Very showy plant
in bloom. Fruits are sticky capsules.
Blooms/fruits:
Uses in the garden: Most often used as a large shrub or accent plant (for it’s flowers). Would work
well as a large screen/hedgerow. Good for erosion control on slopes, hillsides.

leucodermus X C. thyrsiflorus hybrid cultivar ‘L.T. Blue’ is slightly smaller (8 ft x 6 ft) and probably
hardier in garden settings, while retaining other characteristics of C. leucodermis.
Sensible substitute for: Non-native large shrubs.
Excellent habitat plant. Nectar attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Fruits and dense
foliage provide cover & food for birds. Deer eat the foliage.
