2. What is Culture? A culture is a way of life practiced by a group of people There are many different kinds of people in the world, and there are many cultures

3. Have you ever met someone from another country? Did that person dress, eat, or behave in ways that were different from what you’re used to?

5. Let’s take a look at some of the things that are an important part of culture…

6. Language In a culture, most people speak the same language English, Spanish, French, and Italian are some examples of languages …Did you know that there are THOUSANDS of different languages in the world?

7. Art Artists get their ideas from their culture… So, we can learn about a culture from the art people create Each culture has it’s own artistic style

8. Bright colors are often used in Mexican art.

9. Music Different cultures, different sounds! Different combinations of instruments, rhythm, and melodies Cultural celebrations, religious ceremonies, and personal expression

10. Religion, Beliefs, and Values Each culture has it’s own set of beliefs and way of thinking Some cultures have many religions; some have only one Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam are examples of religion

We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” Ancient Native American Proverb Native American cultures have strong beliefs about the importance of nature and the earth.

12. Traditions A tradition is anything that has been done by the people of a culture for a long time, and continues to be passed down Traditions that we have here in the U.S. include: Watching fireworks on The Fourth of July Eating birthday cake on our birthdays

13. Henna painting In some parts of India, brides have designs painted on their skin with paint made from the henna plant for good luck.

14. Social Customs The way people of a culture behave in social groups What is normal in one culture may not be in another culture Shaking hands when we greet someone is a social custom here in the United States BUT…

15. …Different cultures have different greetings In France, people kiss each other on the cheeks to say Hello. In Japan, people often bow to each other.

16. The world is filled with MANY cultures Every culture is interesting and unique Be proud of your culture!
