2. One common type of cancer is kidney cancer. Since it is a
common type of cancer, it is important to learn about it so that
you are knowledgeable about treating it and determining the
right treatment for it. There are numerous aspects of kidney
cancer that you should know about.
Basically kidney (renal) cancer is when cells in the kidney
become abnormal. These cells then may start to grow in a rapid
and uncontrollable manner. These cells will then grow into a
malignant tumor. If this tumor is left untreated, it may spread
to the nearby tissues and organs. The most common type of
kidney cancer is renal carcinoma. Its specific is that the tumor
cells begin to grow in the lining of the tiny tubes of the organ
called tubules.
Unfortunately the exact cause of cancer is not known for this
type of cancer. On the positive note, researchers have
identified many risk factors that can increase the risk of getting
this type of cancer. Age is the first risk factor and it seems that
individuals over the age of 40 are at a higher risk that those
individuals under that age of 40. It is also more prevalent in
men and African Americans. Unfortunately there is not much
you can do about these risk factors except to be more aware of
kidney cancer and its symptoms. There are some risk factors
that you do have some control over however. Being obese is
one risk factor as well as having high blood pressure. Another
3. risk factor that may increase your chances of getting kidney
cancer is taking pain medications for an extended period of
time. Smoking raises the risk of many types of cancer and
kidney cancer is no different. Research indicates that smokers
are two times more likely to develop the condition than non-
smokers.
Research shows that if anyone in your family has had kidney
cancer in the past, you will be at a higher risk as well. Another
medical condition that may increase your risk is having
advanced kidney disease. There are also a few genetic
conditions that can increase the risk as well.
Cancer treatment is more effective when cancer is caught early
so knowing the symptoms is a vital part in preventing and
treating cancer. The most common kidney cancer symptoms
include blood in the urine and a lump in your side or abdominal
area. You might also have any of the following symptoms like
persistent pain on the side, persistent inexplicable fever and
extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss and anemia. Some
people may experience swelling in the ankles and legs.
4. If you have any of these symptoms, you may want to consult
with a doctor to ensure you are free of cancer or if you are not
you can get treatment early. To diagnose this disease, your
doctor will likely use urine and blood tests. In addition to these
tests, your doctor may use intravenous pyelogram, a CT scan,
ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. In a lot of cases,
this type of cancer can be diagnosed without a biopsy.
If you are diagnosed with kidney cancer the normal treatment
is using a surgery called nephrectomy. During this surgery, part
of the kidney may be removed. They also may remove the
whole kidney and maybe some nearby adrenal glands and
lymph nodes as well. IF surgery is not possible, your doctor may
use other types of treatments like creotherapy, which uses
extreme cold to kill the malignant cells, and radiofrequency
therapy, which uses radio waves with high energy.
