The document discusses how journalists can effectively use Twitter, Facebook, and blogging to engage with audiences in less than 30 minutes per day. It recommends journalists post both self-centric "garden variety" updates about their own activities as well as other-centric "good karma" updates that focus on sharing interesting content with followers. A variety of tools like HootSuite, TweetDeck and RSS feeds are presented to help journalists efficiently cross-post updates across social media sites while still prioritizing human interaction over full automation.

STAY CURRENT STAY RELEVANT BE ON THE CUTTING EDGE KEEP FINGERS ON THE PULSE BE THOUGHT LEADERS BE INNOVATORS OH, AND PRODUCE GREAT CONTENT, TOO! And now they’re telling us we have to do Facebook and Twitter and blogging? YIKES. I’m here to tell you that Facebook, Twitter, and blogging can actually HELP you achieve those goals.
So what’s a journalist to do? How’s a journalist supposed to have her journalist cake and social media it up too? The secret is to KNOW what you’re DOING, KNOW who you’re TARGETING, and then figure out what TOOLS to use to make getting there much faster. The truth is, you may need under a half an hour to set it up, but you don’t need to take the same amount of time to update it. And it’s a lot easier than you think.
Why Twitter, Facebook, and blogging? Why these tools in particular? Because that’s where the PEOPLE are. That’s where the AUDIENCE is, that’s where the CONVERSATION and the ACTION is happening. It’s the VIRTUAL COCKTAIL PARTY happening all around you. You get to DROP IN on it, GATHER INFORMATION from it, and GLEAN TIPS from it. AND THAT’S WHERE YOU WANT TO BE TOO.
Easiest to USE Easiest to KEEP UP with Easiest to WORK INTO your schedule It has the BEST TOOLS
What YOU’RE doing Where YOU’RE going What YOU’RE working on YOUR articles YOUR photos of your fabulous journalist life Use it to RESEARCH and GATHER information (crowdsourcing) for YOUR projects See a theme here? That’s the easy part.

YES, THESE TOOLS CAN DO THINGS FOR YOU. But you must set them up. And while some of them are ALMOST plug and play, they’re not QUITE that. Because what are social networks if you don’t update them? They’re static. And social media is ANYTHING but static.
Most of the world is on Facebook Some of your most DEDICATED supporters are there - friends, family At its heart, Facebook is a PERSONAL NETWORK, so there’s a greater BUY-IN or endorsement of things you post from those in your Facebook network TALK ABOUT MY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FACEBOOK AND TWITTER

Like I said, social media is ANYTHING but static. These tools will make Facebook EASIER, but they won’t update Facebook FOR you.
IT DEPENDS Complete automation is a BIG NO NO But partial automation can be used sparingly (like with RSS feeds) -If you link Twitter to Facebook, make sure you respond to the comments on Facebook -If you link Facebook to Twitter, pay attention to those replies and the discussion generated by your tweets REMEMBER: They’re different audiences with different objectives A one size fits all approach may lose you followers instead of gaining them
It’s not your opus, you won’t win a Pulitzer for anything in your blog - ever It’s your outlet for free-form, creative expression, so don’t take it so seriously! Think of it as your sandbox on the web (especially if posting finished work on another site) Links go a long way! By the way - you don’t NEED to blog every day, unless it’s your primarily publication outlet. A couple times a week will suffice, so give yourself a little time to percolate and ruminate.

Remember that I said it’s all about setup? It is, because once setup’s over, all you do is check and update. Tabs are your best friend. Google Reader Email (Google Alerts) HootSuite Facebook I’ve already set up Twitterfeed and RSS Graffiti, so that doesn’t factor in anymore If I see something on Facebook, I’ll like it If I see something on Twitter, I’ll retweet it I make heavy use of the Twitter and Facebook mobile apps
