SYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: THE EYE OF THE SKIN
AUTHOR: JUHANI PALLASMA
Based on the article, The Eye of The Skin written by Juhani Pallasma, I have understand that he had
taken concern on the issues regarding to the “dominance of vision and the suppression of other senses
in the way architecture was taught, conceived and critiqued” which meant that the other senses such
as hearing, smell, touch and taste could also play an important role on how we interpret the architecture
but not only from the perception from our eyes. Through the statement mentioned, I am totally agree
with it as we could observe the architecture not only by viewing but feel the sense of nearness to the
architecture by other sensory. Architecture surrounding allows occupants to getting through more new
perceptions of itself when we not only restrict our observation by using our eyes.
From the Petaling Street site that we have been doing our studio assignment at, it is a famous
Chinatown heritage attraction that become a focal point of the Kuala Lumpur. We could understand
the background history of the shop houses that still remained well in the area not only by observing
the façade of the buildings but could hear the timeline story from the local people regarding to the shop
houses in Chinatown. We get to know the materiality and texture of each different shop houses that
have maintain many years until now without getting demolished away or may include some new design
features after being restore due to their specific function. Each sensory that we response to the shop
houses allow us to be more appreciate and take concern on the significant history and memories that
we spend in the place especially to the local in Chinatown.
To be concluded that “The senses not only mediate information for the judgment of the intellect; they
are also a means of igniting the imagination and of articulating sensory thought” said by Juhani
Pallasma is really a very significant statement as the distance formed between the architecture can
also clearly be understand through the feeling of sensesduring the design process while remind people
the essence memory of the history.
