1. EDUCATE on the matter As how the saying goes, "Knowledge is Power". The information need to be in a straightforward explanation and if technical or jargons have to be included, do explain thoroughly. 2. EMPOWER young people for decision-making We have heard slogan's like 'youth is the future', 'young people are leaders' etc., but how many of youth programme or policies actually allow young people to be involved in making decisions, not just accepting it? Guide the young ones to take lead in a gradual pace and allow for growth. 3. ERADICATE young people’s disadvantages Many of young people's fault nowadays are simply just because we are young i.e. No work, no experience, no influence etc., and these will come as young people grow up and mature. Yet, as youth mentors, we eradicate their disadvantages with giving trainings, advices, opportunities etc. 4. ESTABLISH partnership with adults The mindset of 'young people to be worked on' should be changed to 'young people need to be worked with'. The intergenerational gap can be lessen with collaboration, building trusts and working hand in hand between adults and young people. 5. EMBED fun in all activities No one wants to attend boring activities. Period. 6. ENDORSE role-models to set example Someone of influence can have a big impact on one's attitude. We have seen many leaders inspire their followers with their speeches, actions, beliefs etc. It does not need to be someone famous or even a superstar; sometimes it could be just that elder brother or an experienced mentor. 7. ENGAGE young people as peer-educator Young people relate better to their own age range or having similar interests. These peers can be trained to engage their other peers. This chain effect are best practices seen in programmes like substance abuse, peer counsellors, and even in study groups. 8. ENSURE access to services & correct information is available Frustrations with accessibility to services and information hinder the desire of young people to develop themselves. This can be considered a part of communication breakdown and efficiency in executing youth programmes. Hence, it is important for the services to be available and accessible. 9. EDUTAINMENT as a tool to reach out In this age of social media and human's desire of entertainment, educating young people via this medium is a potential that should be tapped into. One should not be left out in this information age. 10. EVALUATE programme Monitoring and evaluation of our programme should be done throughout and after it is executed. This is to make sure it stays relevant, be more efficient and to address weaknesses. 11. EMPHASISE values in all approaches The last yet the most important of all E's; values. Even we have a well developed, educated and empowered youths but if values e.g. religious, cultural, society etc, are not instilled, it will just be preparing our young ones without the real purpose.
