AMERICAN CULTURE
WHAT IS REFORM???
• SOMEONE IS TRYING TO CHANGE
SOMETHING.
• IN THE 1800'S PEOPLE SAW HOW MANY
INSTITUTIONS IN THE U.S. WERE AND FELT
REFORM WAS NECESSARY
• MANY OF THE REFORMERS WERE WOMEN
• SOME OF THE MOVEMENTS WERE ENDING
SLAVERY, DRINKING ALCOHOL EDUCATION,
WOMEN'S RIGHTS, JAILS AND MENTAL
INSTITUTIONS
WHAT WAS THE SECOND GREAT
AWAKENING????
• Renewal of religious faith
in the early 1800s
• Anyone could receive
salvation
• Traveling preachers held
camp meetings where
they preached that faith
led to helping others
• This awakened the
reform spirit of America
as people began to
believe they could act to
make things better
WHO WAS DOROTHEA DIX????
• Dorothea Dix campaigned
for the mentally ill and
prison reform.
• Her efforts led to the
building of 32 new mental
institutions, and prisons
began calling for
rehabilitation
• Schools for the deaf and
the blind were also started
WHAT WAS THE TEMPERANCE
MOVEMENT???
The Temperance
Movement was a
campaign to stop the
drinking of alcohol and
benefit society.
Supported by women who
said it led to the breakup
of the family
Alcohol was banned in 13
states.
WHAT WERE SOME IMPROVEMENTS
IN EDUCATION???
• Few children
attended school.
• Horace Mann asked
the state (MA) for
money for education.
• Under Mann new
schools were built,
school year extended,
and school to train
teachers opened.
WHAT WERE SOME IMPROVEMENTS
IN EDUCATION FOR BLACKS???
• A few states set up
schools for black
students.
• Blacks opened their
own schools to
educate their children
• Some Blacks
attended private
colleges like Harvard
or Oberlin.
WHAT WAS THE ABOLITIONIST
MOVEMENT???
• An abolitionist wanted to
end or abolish slavery
• William Lloyd Garrison
printed the most
influential anti-slavery
newspaper called the
Liberator
• The Grimke Sisters
grew up on a plantation
and believed slavery was
morally wrong
WHO WERE SOME FAMOUS
AFRICAN AMERICAN
ABOLITIONISTS??
• Frederick Douglass and
Sojourner Truth were
traveling abolitionist
speakers who spoke from
their own experience of
slavery
• Douglass began
publishing an antislavery
newspaper called the
North Star.
WHAT WAS THE UNDERGROUND
RAILROAD????
• This was a series of
escape routes from the
South to the North
• Runaway slaves
traveled by foot,
wagon, boat, and train
• Harriet Tubman was a
conductor on the
Underground
Railroad
A CALL FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS
• Most women suffragists
started out as
abolitionists.
• When not allowed to
speak at the World
Anti-Slavery
Convention in London
in 1840, they turned
some of their interests
to equality for women

that demanded equality
for women in these

listed several
complaints and
resolutions, ending
with a demand for
voting rights (suffrage).
WORKER RIGHTS
• Factory work was
noisy, tedious, and
unsafe, and workers
began calling for
better conditions
through labor unions
and strikes

  • 1. REFORM MOVEMENTS AND A NEW AMERICAN CULTURE

WHAT IS REFORM??? • SOMEONE IS TRYING TO CHANGE SOMETHING. • IN THE 1800'S PEOPLE SAW HOW MANY INSTITUTIONS IN THE U.S. WERE AND FELT REFORM WAS NECESSARY • MANY OF THE REFORMERS WERE WOMEN • SOME OF THE MOVEMENTS WERE ENDING SLAVERY, DRINKING ALCOHOL EDUCATION, WOMEN'S RIGHTS, JAILS AND MENTAL INSTITUTIONS

WHAT WAS THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING???? • Renewal of religious faith in the early 1800s • Anyone could receive salvation • Traveling preachers held camp meetings where they preached that faith led to helping others • This awakened the reform spirit of America as people began to believe they could act to make things better
  • 4. WHO WAS DOROTHEA DIX???? • Dorothea Dix campaigned for the mentally ill and prison reform. • Her efforts led to the building of 32 new mental institutions, and prisons began calling for rehabilitation • Schools for the deaf and the blind were also started
  • 5. WHAT WAS THE TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT??? The Temperance Movement was a campaign to stop the drinking of alcohol and benefit society. Supported by women who said it led to the breakup of the family Alcohol was banned in 13 states.
  • 6. WHAT WERE SOME IMPROVEMENTS IN EDUCATION??? • Few children attended school. • Horace Mann asked the state (MA) for money for education. • Under Mann new schools were built, school year extended, and school to train teachers opened.
  • 7. WHAT WERE SOME IMPROVEMENTS IN EDUCATION FOR BLACKS??? • A few states set up schools for black students. • Blacks opened their own schools to educate their children • Some Blacks attended private colleges like Harvard or Oberlin.
  • 8. WHAT WAS THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT??? • An abolitionist wanted to end or abolish slavery • William Lloyd Garrison printed the most influential anti-slavery newspaper called the Liberator • The Grimke Sisters grew up on a plantation and believed slavery was morally wrong
  • 9. WHO WERE SOME FAMOUS AFRICAN AMERICAN ABOLITIONISTS?? • Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth were traveling abolitionist speakers who spoke from their own experience of slavery • Douglass began publishing an antislavery newspaper called the North Star.
  • 10. WHAT WAS THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD???? • This was a series of escape routes from the South to the North • Runaway slaves traveled by foot, wagon, boat, and train • Harriet Tubman was a conductor on the Underground Railroad
  • 11. A CALL FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS • Most women suffragists started out as abolitionists. • When not allowed to speak at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840, they turned some of their interests to equality for women
  • 12. WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SENECA FALLS CONVENTION??? Participants in the 1848 Seneca Falls meeting voted upon a resolution that demanded equality for women in these places-Work, schools and churches
  • 13. WHAT HAPPENED AT THE SENECA FALLS CONVENTION??? They read their Declaration of Sentiments-which listed several complaints and resolutions, ending with a demand for voting rights (suffrage).
  • 14. WORKER RIGHTS • Factory work was noisy, tedious, and unsafe, and workers began calling for better conditions through labor unions and strikes
