- Essentially, websites pointing to you are telling their readers to go to your site, so they’ve placed their vote of confidence in you. The more links (votes) your website receives, the more popular it is considered to be.
- Inorganic; anyone can do it, regardless of content quality. Any link paid for is considered an ad, and must be made explicit. Guest blogging just to earn a link without caring about content is considered spam. Think: would a credible site host a guest blogger that produces poor content? ‘I’ll give you a link if you give me one’ is NOT allowed! Don’t constantly post comments, tweets, etc. with your link or asking for a link. Google doesn’t count links in comments anyway, and spamming may get you blocked by the webmaster.
- Sponsor events Related to your business somehow to target similar audiences. Often, charities will have very reputable sites. Blogging Blog for high quality, related sites in similar industries Produce high quality content that will draw readers to your site Building relations Social media: Tweet them something useful and new. Email: personalization is key. Industry experts often have ‘monthly roundup’ posts, bring your product to their attention. Seeking out brand mentions Search for your brand in search engines and go to pages you’re mentioned in. They may have mentioned you but not linked you - ask!

- For one, the links aren’t actually broken. For example, if you run a broken link checking program like Check My Links on an old SEOMoz.org link, it shows up as working: Links to SEOMoz.orgSure, that SEOMoz.org link IS technically working (because it redirects to Moz.com). BUT the link points to the old URL. Also, the anchor text has the site’s old name. Which means it’s out of date.
