Let’s get the party started by clicking on the Camtasia Studio 5 icon that you will find on your desktop after you have downloaded the 30 trial
Click here to start new screen recording Tutorials in Camtasia 5.0 available anytime
Based on your type of mic, decide level for volume. Stationary mic should have highest volume possible to ensure sound quality. Make sure that microphone box is checked Make sure your mic is plugged in before you Start. Click the Audio options to set up microphone settings. (Only set up first time)
Make sure that microphone is the source device listed. Click the Audio Setup Wizard to test if mic Is working properly.
Make sure that microphone is the source device listed. Make sure that input level is where you desire based on your type of mic. Make sure your mic is on, and speak into the mic to test the device. You should see your voice inflection in this greenish-yellow bar. If no green bar, shut Camtasia Studio, make sure mic is plugged in properly, and try process again. Click next if test runs properly
Click the Auto-Adjust Volume button, wait for the prompt, and speak the sentence listed. This will level the inflection of your speaking to ensure high quality audio in your vodcast. When the test states that you are done, click finish.
Click on the Select area to record button. You will only have to do this once, if you will generally use the same recording window. For any future screen captures, you can click the Last area button.
The crosshair moves to select the window of the overall screen you wish to record. The red box highlighted would be the only portion of the screen that would be recorded. You can more the crosshair to select the size of your screen you wish to capture in your screen recording.
By sliding the crosshair to the top of the screen, it creates a capture screen you can see in the red outline. This is almost the entire screen. Only the taskbar at the bottom of the screen is not being recorded by selecting this window.
If you want to capture the entire screen with the crosshair, move the crosshair to the bottom corner, hold down the left mouse button, and slide the opposite corner, and you will be recording the entire screen including the task bar. You can see the red box around the entire screen.
Once you have selected your window size, you will see the Camtasia Recorder show up in the bottom corner. Here you can change the size of your window. When you have selected your window of choice, click the red record button to start the screen capture and begin your vodcast!!
Once you hit the record button, your vodcast is as short or long as you would like; Lets review these steps up to this point live, to bring these ideas more clarity. Once we review this, we will move to creating the movie of the recorded screen capture by deciding on the settings desired to the vodcast in question.
One you are ready to stop your vodcast or screen capture recording, you have a few options. - You can click F9 to pause and un-pause your recording - You can click F10 to stop the recording - If you are using an Interactive White Board, you may double click or right click the red Camtasia Recorder icon in the bottom, right task bar
This is the Camtasia Recorder control panel that pops up if you double click Camtasia icon in the task tray. The reason that the Camtasia icon is currently green is because when you are creating a vodcast, the icon flashes from red to green to let you know you are recording. This window is not as profession as the smaller window shown on the next page, because these windows will show up in the end of the vodcast unless you edit them out.
This is the window that pops up if you right-click the Camtaia Studio icon with your mouse or interactive whiteboard pen. I use this one more often since it is less intrusive into the content of the vodcast than the previous window that will pop up in the middle of the computer screen. You should click stop if you wish to now convert your screen capture into a movie.
When you click stop on your vodcast or screen capture, you will see this screen that previews what you just recorded. You can see that this recording is about 7 seconds long, and if I like what I conducted during my screen capture or like what I saw in the preview, I will click save. If there is an error, and there often is an issue in vodcasting, you will click delete.
Once you click save, you will be prompted to save the file as a .camrec file type. This is not a movie file yet, and you must render this type of file into the movie format of your choice. We will be reviewing that shortly. Make sure that you are saving in the Camtasia Studio folder. Please name your file something that you or your students will be able to recognize. This name will be the name that the file shows when the students can access this movie on the Internet. Then click save.
If you want to edit your screencast by cropping in or out specific parts of your screencast, click Edit my recording. This is an advanced process and should be only attempted if you understand the process of editing video. If you want to make another vodcast before you render the screencast(s) into a movie, click the create another recording. This is the button that should clicked by default. If you wish to render your screncast into a movie, click OK.
This setting is not usually the default setting, but once you click this the first time, each sub sequential time, you render your screencast, this button will stay clicked. This button will allow you to create your movie in a variety of formats. This is the default button, but make sure you click the custom setting.
Flash is the default setting and produces the best quality movies, but if you have a large file such as a 45 minute lesson, it took over 4.5 hours to render into a flash file. WMV is my file of choice. The image quality is fine, and the rendering time for my 45 minute lesson is about 7 to 10 minutes. MOV and iPod are options if you have Mac format or you want the kids to be able to download the files from screencast.com to their iPods.
All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
Your video size is up to your preference. It is common sense that the bigger the video size, the larger the size of file. If storage is an issue, you may want to consider a smaller size. I always choose the largest setting possible so that the vodcast details can still be seen while the vodcast is watched. If you choice a smaller window, those detail are often lost or not as clear based on my experiences.
All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
This name is the same that you named the file when you saved the .camrec file earlier in the process. This is the default folder where both your .camrec (screencast) and your rendered movie will be stored. You can save it where you like, but know that these files are potentially large, so plan accordingly. This button is totally up to you. The results pop up when the movie is down rendering, and if you are teaching while rendering, and this file pops up, it us quite annoying. So, I would un-click this button unless you want that data. IMPORTANT: Make sure this button ins clicked to ensure that Camtasia will upload your movie to Sceeencast.com. Otherwise, you must do it manually. If so click, Finish. Leave production results on.
If you get this message, you did not select a Flash format (SWF) to create your movie in. This is OK, just click yes to continue.
This window will pop up if you told Camtasia to upload the finished movie to Screencast.com. (We will discuss Screencast soon.) You should have already set up a Screencast account before you get here, but if you have not, you can sign-up for a free trial of the hosting service. If you have an account, enter your email and password, and click Log In. At this point, your video will begin to render.
This window will pop up once you log in and show you the rendering process. This process will take anywhere from a minute or less for a small recording to up to 10 minutes for as large recording such as a class lecture or activity. These times are based on selecting the .wmv format in the creation process shown earlier. If you chose a flash format, the rendering is much, much longer.
This window will pop up when the rendering is finished. This is the production results that was clicked by default in the creation choices explained earlier in the presentation. Click finish to upload to screencast.com.
If you leave this clicked, the vodcast would be playing now that you created. Once again, I find that the vodcast playing after rendering is highly disruptive, especially if you are teaching as the vodcast is rendering while you are teaching a lesson. IMPORTANT: Once again, you has to click this upload button for the movie to be transferred to Screencast.com. This button is why your production results were just displayed. We set these setting before we recorded the vodcast.
Once you click finish, you will get this window, click yes, to send to Screencast.com.
Uploading window will pop up at this point and when it reaches 100%, it will sit there for a few moments, then it will tell you it has uploaded, and provide you with a URL to link to if you wish your students to access the vodcast..
This window is the final window of the vodcast process. This verifies that Camtasia Studio 5 has successful rendered your movie and transferred it to Screencast.com. The URL is an important piece of info that you might wish to copy and paste into your web editor to provide access to your students to view the vodcast. This file will now be accessible in “My Library” in your Screencast.com account. If you wish to embed the file in a blog, there is code provided as well.
Lets go back into Camtasia and show all of the steps to you live!! Feel free to take whatever notes to wish to as the process we just reviewed is modeled. If you have any questions, feel free to ask as we model this portion of the lesson before we go on to Screencast.com.
Welcome to Screencast.com, which serves as the hosting service provided byTech Smith, the producers of Camtasia Studio 5. You should come to this site before vodcasting to sign up for free account to try the features of Screencast to see if this is a tool you wish to pay for after the 60 day trial. My students and I find this site invaluable, and I hope you do as well. Click Get Started button to sign up for your free account.
The Featured Screencasts and the Training Library offer a wealth of tutorial vodcasts on “how to” issues within Screencast.com.

This page is self-explanatory. The only catch is that your Display name for your Screencast account must meet the following specifications: A valid display name is between 2 and 20 characters, starts with a letter, does not include spaces, and is made up of letters, numbers, and the following symbols: period (.), hyphen (-), and underscore (_).
If you get this blue message, then your account was successfully created. Log onto your email account to follow the directions laid out there. If you get a red message, you made a mistake that needs finished. I kept getting a red error until I read what was a valid Display name.
You should have an email such as this in your email account.
Click this URL to activate your screencast account. Log into screencast again, and you are ready to upload vodcasts to www.screencast.com !!
Once you get this blue message, your account is activated, type in your password to enter the world of www.screencast.com
This is you’re my Library where all vodcasts that are uploaded will be stored. You can view all account info, and I will review that information shortly.
Each vodcast can be viewed (eye), edited (paper/pencil), shared with others via email (arching arrows) and deleted (X with circle) by clicking on the desired icon. Data that displays number of vodcast downloads and size of file and usage of bandwidth. Bandwidth we will discuss shortly. Control panel to upload vodcasts from Camtasia Studios 5 manually; you can create folders to organize different vodcasts or move the vodcasts from folder to folder. Toggles the view of your vodcast slides from hortizontal to vertical.
No need to alter the account info Storage usage is sum of all the file sizes in My Library. Storage usage is on the vodcast creators side of the tracks. The more files you create, the more storage usage. There are many different pricing plans with various amounts of storage such as a cell phone plan, and if you exceed your usage, you can purchase more for a reasonable price or upgrade to a higher level account with more monthly storage usage. Bandwidth usage is on the student side of the tracks. Each time any vodcast is viewed, the size of the file is counted in the bandwidth usage. Bandwidth is the usage meter you will have to check regularly to make you your account does not exceed the usage. If you exceed the usage, viewers will be blocked from accessing files until you upgrade or buy more if needed.

  • 19. Let’s get the party started by clicking on the Camtasia Studio 5 icon that you will find on your desktop after you have downloaded the 30 trial
  • 20. Click here to start new screen recording Tutorials in Camtasia 5.0 available anytime
  • 21. Based on your type of mic, decide level for volume. Stationary mic should have highest volume possible to ensure sound quality. Make sure that microphone box is checked Make sure your mic is plugged in before you Start. Click the Audio options to set up microphone settings. (Only set up first time)
  • 22. Make sure that microphone is the source device listed. Click the Audio Setup Wizard to test if mic Is working properly.
  • 24. Click the Auto-Adjust Volume button, wait for the prompt, and speak the sentence listed. This will level the inflection of your speaking to ensure high quality audio in your vodcast. When the test states that you are done, click finish.
  • 25. Click on the Select area to record button. You will only have to do this once, if you will generally use the same recording window. For any future screen captures, you can click the Last area button.
  • 26. The crosshair moves to select the window of the overall screen you wish to record. The red box highlighted would be the only portion of the screen that would be recorded. You can more the crosshair to select the size of your screen you wish to capture in your screen recording.
  • 27. By sliding the crosshair to the top of the screen, it creates a capture screen you can see in the red outline. This is almost the entire screen. Only the taskbar at the bottom of the screen is not being recorded by selecting this window.
  • 28. If you want to capture the entire screen with the crosshair, move the crosshair to the bottom corner, hold down the left mouse button, and slide the opposite corner, and you will be recording the entire screen including the task bar. You can see the red box around the entire screen.
  • 29. Once you have selected your window size, you will see the Camtasia Recorder show up in the bottom corner. Here you can change the size of your window. When you have selected your window of choice, click the red record button to start the screen capture and begin your vodcast!!
  • 30. Once you hit the record button, your vodcast is as short or long as you would like; Lets review these steps up to this point live, to bring these ideas more clarity. Once we review this, we will move to creating the movie of the recorded screen capture by deciding on the settings desired to the vodcast in question.
  • 37. This setting is not usually the default setting, but once you click this the first time, each sub sequential time, you render your screencast, this button will stay clicked. This button will allow you to create your movie in a variety of formats. This is the default button, but make sure you click the custom setting.
  • 39. All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
  • 41. All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
  • 42. All these setting are preset, and should be left as they are found, click next.
  • 44. If you get this message, you did not select a Flash format (SWF) to create your movie in. This is OK, just click yes to continue.
  • 47. This window will pop up when the rendering is finished. This is the production results that was clicked by default in the creation choices explained earlier in the presentation. Click finish to upload to screencast.com.
  • 49. Once you click finish, you will get this window, click yes, to send to Screencast.com.
  • 50. Uploading window will pop up at this point and when it reaches 100%, it will sit there for a few moments, then it will tell you it has uploaded, and provide you with a URL to link to if you wish your students to access the vodcast..
  • 52. Lets go back into Camtasia and show all of the steps to you live!! Feel free to take whatever notes to wish to as the process we just reviewed is modeled. If you have any questions, feel free to ask as we model this portion of the lesson before we go on to Screencast.com.
  • 54. The Featured Screencasts and the Training Library offer a wealth of tutorial vodcasts on “how to” issues within Screencast.com.
  • 55.
  • 57. If you get this blue message, then your account was successfully created. Log onto your email account to follow the directions laid out there. If you get a red message, you made a mistake that needs finished. I kept getting a red error until I read what was a valid Display name.
  • 58. You should have an email such as this in your email account.
  • 59. Click this URL to activate your screencast account. Log into screencast again, and you are ready to upload vodcasts to www.screencast.com !!
  • 60. Once you get this blue message, your account is activated, type in your password to enter the world of www.screencast.com
  • 61. This is you’re my Library where all vodcasts that are uploaded will be stored. You can view all account info, and I will review that information shortly.
  • 64.
  • 65.
  • 66.
  • 67.
  • 68. Vodcasting is not rocket science!
