  • 2. Objective of presentation • Introduce Impulsis • Introduce partner organisations (MoNGOs) • Discuss cooperation between RO and Impulsis
  • 3. Impulsis partners: MoNGOs My Own NGO Private Initiative (PI) Small scale development organisation 4th pillar of development aid Reason to start MoNGO: Personal commitment to local people, resulting from travel or prolonged stay in developing country
  • 4. Impulsis facts & figures • Started in 2006 • Staff: 12 people (8 PO, 2 communication officers, 2 administrative / financial staff) • 376 partners • 2009: 190 contracts (€ 5.5 million)
  • 5. Impulsis focus • Education • Local entrepreneurship • Health care and HIV/Aids • Water and sanitation • Climate and environment (starting 2011)
  • 6. Impulsis activities • Advice (expertise countries, themes) • Financial support • Networking events and training • Linking partners with relevant actors in developing countries
  • 7. Impulsis criteria • Dutch MoNGO working with local organisation • Link with ICCO Alliance countries and programs • Financial support max 50% of project budget • Preferably longer term cooperation • Goal: sustainable project or program
  • 8. Dutch MoNGOs facts & figures • Appr. 10,000 MoNGOs in The Netherlands • 50% founded after 2000 • Funding: € 52 mln private donations, € 40 mln other sources (2007) • 1/3 of the Dutch public prefer MoNGOs over professional NGOs
  • 9. Dutch MoNGOs why so popular? • Tangible (output orientated) • Direct (no bureaucracy, low overhead) • Small scale of aid intervention -> quick results • Personal bond with people of MoNGO • Involvement of own community (school, church etc) • Short aid chain
  • 10. Dutch MoNGO’s weaknesses & threats • High trust in local organisation, low trust in local population • Tendency to set up parallel structures • Working in isolation, low awareness of other stakeholders • Emotional approach

  • 13. ICCO-Alliance & Impulsis what can you do for MoNGOs? • Provide advice related to proposals on request of Impulsis • Occassionally visit Impulsis supported projects • Invite local partners of Dutch MoNGO’s to Alliance evaluation, capacity building, policy formulation meetings
  • 14. ICCO-Alliance & Impulsis challenges • Linking small scale initiatives of Impulsis partners with ICCO-Alliance programs • Build capacity of MoNGOs (professionalize, not bureaucratize)
  • 15. Question How can we ensure effective and efficient communication between the Impulsis team and the ROs in order to enrich the programs of the ICCO Alliance with resources of Dutch MoNGOs, and to enrich the projects of MoNGOs with the expertise of the ICCO Alliance?
