A collection of Welsh folk dances
   Demonstrate skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of
    activities with consistent control and accuracy.
   Begin to develop an increasing variety of imaginative ideas.
   Use compositional principles in creative activities to plan a
    performance with an awareness of the factors that promote quality.
   Begin to refine and adapt previously learned tactics, techniques and
    skills and apply them in new situations.
   Listen carefully to what others say about their work, and use their
    observations to improve the effectiveness and quality of own and
    others’ performances.
   Increasingly, take responsibility for the planning of elements of own
    work.
   Engage in a variety of appropriate, different activities that positively
    affect health, fitness and feelings (about myself).
   Here we have some children from lower KS2 performing a
    traditional dance called ‘Jac y do’. This means ‘Jackdaw’.
   Dance is a part of our PE curriculum and is also
    enjoyed as an extra curricular activity and at certain
    times of the year, e.g. St David’s Day. Around 6-
    10 hours a year are spent on dance.

   Most of these lessons take the form of movement
    and free activity, however, children are taught
    traditional dances from the age of 6 starting with
    ‘Jac y do’

    Children also enjoy dance lessons as part of our
    healthy schools initiative.
   A1 In lines facing partners, forward and back 4 steps.
    Then forward four steps to partner and change places.
   A2 Repeat A1 back to original places.
   B1 Couple 1 give both hands to partner and slip step
    down the centre of the set to the bottom and back.
   B2 Couple 1 cast out, everybody follows. Couple 1 form
    a bridge at the bottom of the set. Everyone else in turn
    meets their partner at the bottom of the set, takes inside
    hand, and leads up under the bridge to re-form the set
    with a new couple in top position.
   Repeat the dance 4 times with a new top couple each
    time.
A 1 – 4 First lady leads all the other ladies around the men and
back to place for a count of 16.

A 5 – 8 First man leads all the other men around the ladies and
back to place for a count of 16.


B1 – 4 Promenade hold, the first couple leads all the other
couples to the count of 16 and back to place.


B5 – 8 First couple cross hands hold and swing partner down to
the bottom of the set
Start the dance again with a new number 1 couple
The children of Upper KS2 perform ‘Dawns Llangrannog’.
   Walk forward 4 steps
   Bounce back 4 steps
   2 stars jumps
   Right leg kicks left, left legs kicks right and
    turn.
   Continue as above.

Folk dances Wales 2011
