Each degree signifies an achievement within the brotherhood, something that is shown
through mark degree regalia. Each step holds its own set of symbols, showing the other
brothers within your lodge what level of knowledge you are entitled to. Mark degree regalia
include breast jewels, collar jewels, aprons, tokens, and other similar symbols. Just like any
other Masonic regalia, a person’s mark degree regalia is something that is given high value
and is either displayed prominently at a lodge or at a person’s home or office, or sometimes
kept safely as one would treat their most valuable possessions. These regalia symbolize the
mark of a true Freemason, showing how they truly are worthy of being set apart from other
ordinary men.
Mark Degree Regalia Symbolizing Different Steps in Being a Freemason
1. Mark Degree Regalia Symbolizing Different
Steps in Being a Freemason
Although it is a given that only exceptional people are considered as worthy to be a
Freemason, merely being initiated as one of them does not automatically put you in the same
level as everybody else. As with anything else, certain steps have to be taken to prove not
only the length of time it took you to gain as much experience in a certain field, but the
amount of knowledge that you accumulate in the process as well. In this regard, the word
‘degree’ can actually mean a ‘step’, and the Freemasons go through certain degrees the
moment they enter the brotherhood to show how they ascend from an entry-level brand of
knowledge to a much higher and deeper one.
There are three different degrees that members of each Masonic lodge go through. The first
degree is the Entered Apprentice Degree, and to be considered to hold this degree, one must
prove that they are morally, physically, and spiritually worthy. Every man who petitions to hold
this degree should be at least 21 years old. Each petitioner’s background is thoroughly
investigated to make sure that they are ideal for the role.
The second degree is the Fellowcraft Degree. Where the first degree was symbolic of new
beginnings and a form of spiritual birth, the second degree signifies a level of progression and
development in the craft. In other words, it is considered as a stage of adulthood and of
spiritual manhood. This means taking on a new set of commitments as well as the brother’s
connection with the rest of the Freemasons further deepens.
2. The third degree is the Master Mason Degree. This shows that the brother has shown his
preparedness to walk on sacred ground and has found the essential balance within his inner
nature. It shows stability, and is symbolic of expanded horizons and sharper mental
capabilities. It means that a Mason has reached a high level of knowledge within the
brotherhood, and would portray the removal of anything that hinders one to reach a
communion with the Supernatural Light.
Each degree signifies an achievement within the brotherhood, something that is shown
