Theme for the Course
The first part of the course will focus on the development of multi-national empires
and religions, while the second half of the course will explore how those entities
balkanized and how intense hyper-nationalism led to the death of millions in the
twentieth century. The class will end with Europe and Japan in ruins after World
War II, thus setting the stage for the “Cold War” between the United States and the
Soviet Union that dominated the latter half of the twentieth century.
Grading Policy
The grading breakdown for each quarter is as follows:

60% Homework Assignments – 15%
