Ask kids future plans, then ask if anyone desires this? Or…
This in their near future.
Have kids identify this charcter (Jack Sparrow--Pirate) Then ask if anyone desires a profession as a pirate. Steer conversation to what pirates did--take treasures, booty, and ask for the tools of the trade of piracy in the days of the character Jack Sparrow.
Identify these as the tools of the modern 21st century pirate, and the “booty” is digital in nature, and includes treasures including music, images, movies, and more. Poll class on how many have access to ipods or other mp3 players, computers, and see if anyone recognizes the screenshot of the program in the bottom left. Slides 10-14 and slides 18-19 have been printed out and hung around the room with post it pads laying nearby. Direct the kids to informally visit each poster and put a sticky not on the side they feel is representative of them (yes or no for each). Direct them to then return to seats and informally discuss the survey with their neighbors. After everyone is done, bring the group back. Informally discuss the results of the survey.
Go through the story of Jammie Thomas. Start with video. (Story is available in Wikipedia: Capitol vs. Thomas) Outline the case and each appeal, and what the results were all the way up to this week’s results (November 4, 2010)
Play latest video clip.
Play clip about limewire. Discuss--ask kids what other sites are available that work the same. Remind kis that not only are users breaking a law that is punishable with hefty fines, these sites also can infect computers with viruses and more.
To offer a balanced view, show this video clip too. Then ask who is right? Suggest the topic for those who are in English III working on argumentative papers.
Review the survey questions one at a time.
The potential consequences….
These two are to be put up at the end to see how the discussion impacted their view.
