Chemers University of California, Santa Cruz This historical overview of leadership theory and research with an eye for commonali- ties provides an opportunity for integration. Early unproductive research focused on personality traits and behaviors. A recognition of the more complex nature of the phenomenon resulted in the development of contingency theories that examined leader characteristics and behavior in the context of situational parameters. The 1970s brought an awareness that perceptions of leaders by followers and others, and perceptions of followers by leaders, were influenced by cognitive biases arising from prior expecta- tions and information-processing schema. Ironically, attention was belatedly drawn to the study of female leaders, who were often the victim of cognitive biases and negative assumptions. Recent research has reflected on the role of cultural differences in leadership processes and has been drawn again into the search for outstanding leaders with universally effective characteristics. The article concludes with an integration of current knowledge in leadership effectiveness. For much of its history, leadership theory and the empirical supporting research have been regarded as a fractured and confusing set of contradictory findings and assertions without coherence or interpretability. In this article T argue that a considerable commonality of well-accepted findings points the way toward a successful and useful integration of current knowledge. That integration, based on the key functions performed by effective leaders, begins to answer the question of how good leaders behave and raises intriguing questions about the personal characteristics of leaders that facilitate those behaviors. This article takes an historical perspective, and the analysis is divided into four periods: (a) the period prior to the presentation of Fiedler's (1964) contingency model; (b) the period from 1965 to 1975, focusing on the development and elaboration of contingency theories; (c) the period from 1975 to 1985, when cognitive theories and concerns about gender differences arose; and (d) the period since 1985, which has most extensively focused on transformational theories and cultural influences. Blown Executive Summary In the aftermath of recent corporate scandals, managers and researchers have turned their attention to questions of ethics management. We identify five common myths about business ethics and provide responses that are grounded in theory, research, and business examples. Although the scientific study of business ethics is relatively new, theory and research exist that can guide executives who are trying to better manage their employees' and their own ethical behavior. We recommend that ethical conduct be managed proactively via explicit ethical leadership and conscious management of the organization's ethical culture. The twenty-first century has brought corporate ethics scandals that have harmed millions of employees and investors, and sent shock waves through- out the business world. The scandals have produced "perp walks" and regulatory backlash, and business ethics is once again a hot topic. Ac- ademics and managers are asking: What caused the recent rash of corporate wrongdoing, and what can we do, if anything, to prevent similar trans- gressions in the future? Perhaps because everyone has opinions about ethics and personal reactions to the scandals, a number of pat answers have circulated that perpetuate a mythology of business ethics management. In this article, we identify several of these myths and respond to them based upon knowledge grounded in research and practice. Myth 1: It's Easy to Be Ethical A 2002 newspaper article was entitled, "Corporate ethics is simple: If something stinks, don't do it." The article went on to suggest "the smell test" or "If you don't want to tell your mom what you're really doing . . . or read about it in the press, don't do it.''̂ The obvious suggestion is that being ethical in business is easy if one wants to be ethical. A fur- ther implication is that if it's easy, it doesn't need to be managed. But that suggestion disregards the complexity surrounding ethical decision-making, especially in the context of business organizations. Ethical Decisions Are Complex First, ethical decisions aren't simple. They're complex by definition. As they have for centuries, phi- losophers argue about the best approaches to making the right ethical decision. Students of business ethics are taught to apply multiple normative frameworks to tough dilemmas where values con- flict. These include consequentialist frameworks that consider the benefits and harms to society of a potential decision or action, deontological frameworks that emphasize the application of ethical principles such as justice and rights, and virtue ethics with its emphasis on the integrity of the moral actor, among other approaches.^ But, in the most challenging ethical dilemma situations, the solutions provided by these approaches con- flict with each other, an.

Are there causal relations in the social realm? This is a hotly disputed question, which received positive as well as negative answers. In this talk, I first defend the view that social science research is concerned with establishing causal relations. To do so, the social sciences develop and employ a whole range of empirical methods, from quantitative to qualitative, and to mixed ones. Second, I explain the sense in which ‘causality’ acts as an epistemic norm that holds an essential role at each stage of the research process, and particularly at the level of study design and data collection. In my reading, causality as an epistemic norm is a stronger claim than ’no causes in, no causes out’, as it has to do with a given conceptualisation of the world, on which we base our causal modelling strategies. Third, I exemplify how this epistemic norm works by looking at questions of measurement in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Ultimately, I aim to show that we can make causal inferences in a sound way -- in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed contexts -- provided that a sufficient level of reflection and self-reflection about our methodological choices and strategies is in place.

Citizen disengagement from politics is one of the main issues in modern democracy. Technologies can be used to tap into new internal motivations for people to take part and make sense of political debate. We present a case study of citizens engaging with the replay of political election debates with a novel hypervideo technology called Democratic Replay. Results of the study show that Democratic Replay increases people’s appetite for a new type of engagement with televised elections debates which is based on the realisation of key dimensions of deliberative democracy, such as: reflecting and focusing on different aspects of the political debate, reconstructing the arguments that politicians are making, and assessing facts and evidence. The study also shows that visual analytics narratives and hypervideo navigation improve sensemaking in that they trigger questioning and changing of personal assumptions that people hold before watching the debate. This is a very encouraging result, which addresses the ongoing concern about the real value of new media in the context of political debate and democratic deliberation: specifically, the scepticism toward their capability to support people’s critical thinking rather than promote polarisation of pre-existing groups and opinions. Our research into new sensemaking technologies and hypervideo shows that new media can crucially provide new ways for citizens to detect and make sense of political manipulations, check facts versus speculations, gain new insights, and confidently inform their political choices. Results of the demographic analysis also show that Democratic Replay appealed to different demographic sub-groups with different sensemaking behaviours. This means that democratic spaces and rights cannot be interpreted uniquely and should respond to people’s personal needs, interpretation and understanding of society. Therefore, technologies for democratic public deliberation need to be designed with a variety of users in mind, and they need to be customised to the needs of different demographic groups if they aim to reach all citizens.

12 Addressing Ethics in Leadership Introduction Leadership has a moral dimension because leaders influence the lives of others. Because of this influential dimension, leadership carries with it an enormous ethical responsibility. Hand in hand with the authority to make decisions is the obligation a leader has to use his or her authority for the common good. Because the leader usually has more power and control than followers have, leaders have to be particularly sensitive to how their leadership affects the well-being of others. What is Ethical Leadership and Why is it Relevant? In recent years, there have been an overwhelming number of scandals in the public and private sectors. Accounting and financial scandals have occurred at some of the largest companies in the world, including Adelphia, Enron, Tyco International, and WorldCom. In addition, there have been stories of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, sexual assaults within the U.S. military, and a multitude of sexual scandals in the lives of public figures including governors, U.S. senators, and mayors, to name but a few. As a result of such high-profile scandals, people are becoming suspicious of public figures and what they do. The public strongly seeks moral leadership. As mentioned in Chapter 1, “Understanding Leadership,” the overriding purpose of this book is to discover “what it takes to be a leader.” Closely related to this question, and perhaps even more important, is “what it takes to be an ethical leader.” That query is the focus of this chapter. This means our emphasis will be on describing how people act when they show ethical leadership. While it is always intriguing to know whether one is or is not perceived by others to be ethical, our emphasis will not be directed toward whether you are or are not ethical, but rather we will focus on the properties and characteristics of ethical leadership. The assumption we are making is that if you understand the nature of ethical leadership, you will be better equipped to engage in ethical leadership. Before we discuss the factors that account for ethical leadership, you may want to go to the end of the chapter and take the Ethical Leadership Style Questionnaire (12.2). It will help you understand your own ethical leadership style and at the same time introduce you to the ideas we will be discussing in this chapter. Leadership Ethics Explained To begin, it is important to first define ethical leadership. In the simplest terms, ethical leadership is the influence of a moral person who moves others to do the right thing in the right way for the right reasons (Ciulla, 2003). Put another way, ethical leadership is a process by which a good person rightly influences others to accomplish a common good: to make the world better, fairer, and more humane. Defining Ethical Leadership Ethics is concerned with the kind of values and morals an individual or society finds desirable or appropriate. In leadership, ethics has to do with what lead.
