- With the release of Visual Studio 2010 we are moving to a nested-model, with three variations – good, better and best.[CLICK]First we have Good – Visual Studio 2010 Professional with or without MSDN. Visual Studio 2010 Professional is the essential tool for basic development tasks to assist developers in implementing their ideas easily. This is the newest release of the Professional-level with added capabilities for SharePoint and Cloud development, among others.[CLICK]Next, we add on to all of the capabilities in Professional with Visual Studio 2010 Premium with MSDN. - There are some additional products in the Visual Studio 2010 family.Team Foundation Server 2010 is the center of gravity – the hub for a development team. Team Foundation Server has a version control repository, a test case management database, a work item tracking and change management system, support of build automation and a comprehensive reporting solution built on SQL Server Reporting Services. Some of the new capabilities of Team Foundation Server include support for gated check-in, branch visualization and drag-n-drop merge, and new Agile Planning tools.[CLICK]Team Lab Management 2010 enables teams to configure and manage virtual lab environment. Team Lab Management works with System Center Virtual Machine Manage enabling teams to create environment templates, provision ring-fenced environments, and checkpoint those environments. Those checkpoints can be attached to bugs filed using the Test and Lab Manager enabling the person fixing the bug to open the environment right to the appropriate point in the application flow.[CLICK]Visual Studio Test Elements 2010 is the essential tool for anyone engaging in test case management or manual test execution in the development lifecycle. This tool is designed for the generalist tester – someone who tests applications, but who is not responsible for writing code. - Of course, a new Visual Studio would be incomplete without a new MSDN.(as an aside: customers with Volume Licensing Agreements get MSDN buy purchasing Software Assurance coverage for their Visual Studio purchases).
- Let’s start off by looking at the software for production use that is included in your MSDN Subscription.With the 2010 release Team Foundation Server will be include in the MSDN Subscription that comes with Visual Studio 2010 Professional, Premium, Ultimate and Test Elements. To be clear, it is a full version of Team Foundation Server, with production-use-rights and no user limitations. Client Access Licenses are still required for Team Foundation Server, so we are including one CAL in MSDN as well.Expression Studio 3 is included for Premium and Ultimate subscribers, as are the Microsoft Office products.* MSDN OS and MSDN Embedded customers will not receive the new TFS benefit.
- Your MSDN Subscription also includes software for development and test use (production use is not granted for this software).All levels of MSDN Subscriptions will receive a Windows Azure benefit. [NEED DETAILS]. Starting November 17, 2009 current MSDN Premium subscribers in many countries can sign up for free Windows Azure Platform services as a subscription benefit. This benefit will expand to subscribers in many other countries throughout the upcoming year.As has been the case for previous releases, Windows operating systems (client and server), SQL Server and other Microsoft server products are included depending on the level of MSDN Subscription you have.
- It is important that as an MSDN Subscriber you also get extra benefits. As of October 19, 2009 MSDN Premium subscribers receive two (2) free E-Learning collections per year from Microsoft Learning, valued at up to $698/year USD. MSDN Professional subscribers receive one (1) collection per year. Collections typically contain 10 courses and up to 20-hours of training. A credit card will be required to activate this benefit.As of October 19, 2009 MSDN Premium subscribers have access to the Microsoft Company Store where they benefit from employee pricing on software and hardware for personal use, as well as other merchandise such as logoed apparel. This allowance works like a Microsoft employee spending allowance at the Company Store – the customer spends their own money, with a limit of up to $TBD (USD) in purchases annually for software and hardware, and no limits on other merchandise.
- I’ve told you about the simplification of the Visual Studio 2010 product line, and about the new value coming in MSDN. Now let me tell you about a special offer we have to help you move from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010.
- Lets recap. The Ultimate Offer will move you up to the next higher-level product when Visual Studio 2010 launches.To be eligible you must: A. - With The Ultimate Offer, if you have an MSDN Premium subscription (software assurance coverage for those of you with Volume Licensing agreements) when Visual Studio 2010 launches, we will move you up one level in the product line. MSDN Operating Systems and MSDN Embedded subscribers will continue at their same subscription level benefits.For example, if you have any version of Visual Studio Team System 2008 with MSDN Premium, when Visual Studio 2010 launches you will move you up to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate with MSDN. If you have Visual Studio 2008 Professional with MSDN Premium you will move you up to Visual Studio 2010 Premium with MSDN.You don’t have to do anything. As long as your MSDN Premium subscription is current when Visual Studio 2010 launches, you will be moved up. There is no additional cost until your MSDN Subscription is up for renewal. At that time you can decide if you want to continue with the new higher-level product, and begin paying the new renewal rate, or renew-down to the next lower-level product and continue paying the rate you are now.
