This presentation will describe the approaches to designing and implementing district-wide professional development in a high-need, Title I school district. The workshop will share approaches to supporting teacher learning and teacher leaders, and also highlight technologies and projects that have been used in schools.
Introductions Our Vision was for integrated teaching with the stuff but - how do we get from minimal technology to school-wide technology infusion? Obtained a grant: Granted $1.6 million (1 st year) and $2.6 million (2 nd year) to create 21 st century teaching and learning environment.
Had to have these components – Grantors wanted to test that including them would lead to these outcomes Grant came with stipulation that 25% needed to be dedicated to “effective” professional development. PD needed to be relevant, ongoing, and support ALL teachers Our task was to provide “Differentiated” PD to suit the various skill levels of our teachers What does that look like?
Overview- Drew Data-driven instruction Teachers have choices about what they focus on Collaboration among facilitators and teachers also teachers/teachers Intense experiences with effective follow-up How do we use technology with students? Allows teachers to examine their teaching
Support of Central Office (no roadblocks, understanding of project goals) School Level (principal’s understand project goals, obtaining 21 st century leadership training, developing a plan for implementation) Realized our planning group couldn’t provide relevant and timely PD without help.
Vanguard team (speed week) – planned PD for remaining staff Interactive Whiteboards Student response systems Web 2.0 tools Collaborative documents (Wikis, Google Docs) Planning together
Monday – technology connectivity, background info/HOTS, collaboration, start integration w/Office games Tuesday – Mimio, Telecollaboration, Quizdom Wednesday – choose topics of interest (Movie Maker, iMovie, Google Tools, Digital Storytelling, podcasting, Web 2.0 tools) Thursday – Media Resources, wikis, revisit, principal expectations Gave them time to practice, and begin to develop useful resources M-Th Friday – full day of collaborative planning (plan something for first day, and a unit that collaborated out of your department)
#1: admin/technology up from 70.9% #2: communicate up from 60.3% #3: student centered up from 45.2% #4: independent learners from 46.8% #5: academic success up from 38.7%

Reteach those that are ready to try again, Reinforce and Extend those that just dabbled and are ready for more details, help those that are ready to move further along Part of the Vanguard team’s responsibility was to pick one struggling staff member and encourage them. Everyone was supposed to use technology a minimum of 10 minutes a day (non-block) and 10 min. per block in HS. Use the media and technology facilitators to assist with technology planning, obtaining resources HS planning sessions were teacher lead with cross-curricular teams in each session. Realized at the end of Year #1 that teachers were using technology OK, but not enough resources available for students to get a daily ‘dose’ of technology. Goal for Year #2 is that NO student will go through the day without touching technology in at LEAST one class.
KIS struggled with collaborative planning and their follow-up was focused on that w/ half-day planning KMS wanted a lot of data-driven instruction so their work last summer w/ Clif in science, Adam Harbaugh in math addressed that. ALBHS working towards 1:1 netbooks for all students in school.
