Garry Kasparov is a renowned chess player, writer, and politician from Azerbaijan. He became a chess master in 1978 at age 15 and went on to become the youngest ever world chess champion in 1985 at age 22, holding the title until 2000. After retiring from competitive chess in 2005, Kasparov turned to politics and ran unsuccessfully for the Russian presidency in 2007. Throughout his career, Kasparov made many contributions to the game of chess and used it as a platform to advocate for political and social causes.
