In the 21st Century Earth continues to be subjected to an indiscriminate exploitation and natural disasters occur where people live in conflict with the environment. Often the reason of the exposure of the population to the natural hazards is consequences of poor spatial planning that fail in accounting properly for hazards and risks drivers, triggering factors and effects. Without any doubt land planning and risk management will be future area of work for geoscientist worldwide and improving this skill requires a global approach. This international vision can be used not only to do business "selling knowledge", but also to simultaneously upgrade skill into the local system especially in poor areas of the world which are the most exposed to environmental risks. Geoscientists would be experts in holistic vision of land and its processes and they could support society by suggesting solution. To achieve these important objectives for future, early career geoscientists can take advantage of new technologies that are increasing the level of environmental knowledge, like development of very high resolution satellite imagery, spreading of GIS software and new geothematic methodologies. In Italy national congress of Young Section of Italian Geological Society, held in Neaples in 2010, handled this problem focusing on the difference of skills between academic offer and professional request. So it is very important that international education opportunity will be offered, like summer school grant or training period in company or university worldwide.

5. Future challenge
Unsustanaible society development (in some landfill economic presence
of raw materials!!!)
Requirement of new land, new resources to exploit
Need of spatial planning...
accounting for hazards and risks drivers, triggering factors and effects

11. Italy & Geology
Italy due to its
distinctive geological
setting is for
geologists a
interesting area.
in this section in a
range of few hundred
kilometers there are a
series of hazards from
flood to landslide, to
earthquake, volcanoe
s, tsunamis…

12. Italian situation
It would be basic have geologists working
always and everywhere
But
there is too few awareness of who is a
geologist and what his fields of work are!

13. No country for Young & geologists?
Lots of early career geoscientist are
looking out the window on the job
opportunity landscape
But…
Lots of jobs are still
unavailable!

14. In Italy…
Our knowledges are used by policy makers like a bulb. It turns on
when a disaster happen and turns off when emergency ends.

italian spatial technologies and offer a worldwide opportunity
of research!

17. What are young geologists doing?
Italian Geological Society – Youg Section
from 2004 is active in spreading geological
culture and networking people
Congresses, Workshops, Forums

18. Not all is so dark
First Sino-Italian Earth Scientists Forum
2012.
Italian Geological Society (SGI) and Chinese
Geological Societies have organized a forum
during 86th National Congress of SGI. The
target of the event is the promotion of dialogue
and build long-term collaborations between
Italian and Chinese scientists and
professionals.

20. Young Earth Scientist Network
Our aim for the future activities in Italy
Increase the exchange of info and calls for fellowship
and thesis grant
Increase contact with Industry (thesis, hiring
opportunity…)
Creating a stronger network which could support and
search found and people for research
Be part of a group whose ideas can be take more into
account by Policy Makers
Spreading awareness about geological culture!
Go on linking groups of young geologists in Italy
Ciro Manzo – yesnetworkitaly@gmail.com 20
21. Ideas for the future…
More awareness -> more attention by policy makers
We should work on different way:
Increase awareness of geological issue in the society
- offering free workshop in the primary, secondary and
high schools! (or organizing school-trips in interesting
geological sites, and doing geoactivities – create our
own volcano)
- Making public discussion about local project of
development or local risk(Landfill site, infrastructure
project, Volcanic risk!, Water, etc…)
Ciro Manzo – yesnetworkitaly@gmail.com 21
22. Ideas for the future…
Increase education and job training
Increase educational period in foreign Universirty
(Erasmus, Socrates, etc…)
Internship contract University and Company
agreement
Course for professional qualifying examination
Social Webinar (gis or new geological softwares…)
Spread by site job opportunity
Creation of database of curriculum vitae for young
geologists
Ciro Manzo – yesnetworkitaly@gmail.com 22
23. International Training
International summer schools could be a way to spread
knowledge, where teachers and students coming from
different countries get in contact with different method of
teach and research
strong multidisciplinary approach;
use ICT tools and services,
thereby contributing to the creation of a
sustainable learning community in the
subject area concerned. (this is true
expecially for developing countries)
