TECHNOLOGY AND
ME
A personal timeline
of educational technology
Overview
My name is Christopher Liu
I started school in 1995 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
I graduated from high school in 2010 from Iolani High
School
I first went to college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
in 2010
When I finish my degree, I hope to become an elementary
school teacher or clinical psychologist.
MY DEFINITION
OF EDUCATIONAL
TECHNOLOGY
…is anything that allows me to connect with
my students on a better level. The eraser was
once “new technology,” after all. Educational
technology helps me to gauge what my
students know and what they might need help
in understanding. It also facilitates the use of
project based learning and my students’
development of 21st
century leadership skills.

Kindergarten technology (I miss being
5)
• I remember Windows
95 well; it was my first
operating system.
Everything from its
sounds to its visuals
was magical. As I will
go into soon, games
were my main passion.
Even in Kindergarten, I
played learning games
all the time.www.guidebookgallery.org
High school technology
• I thought I would try to do
something different for
this slide. In high school,
the piece of technology
that helped me the most
was the mp3 player. To
this day, the thought of
sitting down to complete
homework or study sends
chills down my spine
Studying and homework
with music, though?
Tolerable. I would have
accomplished far less in
academics without my
constant friend (now
deceased), the Zune HD.

College technology
• In the picture, I have my smartphone and laptop computer. My laptop
computer helps me to keep track of everything. I use Dropbox to sync all
of my work, and to share my Honors project with my research mentor. My
laptop helps me to come to class and create documents, presentations,
and more. I use my smartphone to keep track of my schedule (with
Google calendar sync) and OneNote to track my various projects.
A vivid technology
learning experience
• Creating my
online survey for
my Honors
project. It will go
live soon!
A technology I want to use in my
classroom
• Minecraft is a popular video game, but also has great
potential as a learning tool. It can be used to teach,
amongst countless concepts, proportions. In the game, for
example, you might want to build a wooden house. Each
block of wood you have is worth 3 wooden planks. You
could use this situation to teach proportions: 1 block of
wood per 3 wooden planks.
www.iammain.org.uk
My vision of the classroom
of the future
• Not much different. I love
educational technology and
think it has great potential. I will
definitely use tools like Google
Docs to teach collaboration
and editing skills, or tools such
as Voicethread to help my
students share themselves with
me. However, as a prospective
elementary school teacher or
clinical psychologist, I would
never want to instruct my
students or work with my
patients through a screen. I
need to have them right there
with me.
A challenge for teaching
• I now see
copyright/fair use as
a necessary evil, but
I am still a little
disappointed about
the hoops we as
teacher will have to
jump through in
obtaining content for
our students.
Words of wisdom
Children Learn What They Live (Abridged)
By Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those
about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to
live.
