In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The genre of our film trailer is British social realism. The social realism genre focuses on everyday social issues such as poverty. The locations used are usually deprived or typical areas of the middle/working class.  The films of this genre often have negative resolutions and are very realistic.   We used a number of conventions such as the locations in our film and in the ancillary tasks were typical British locations such as a cobbled terraced street.
During research we looked at locations in other social realism films such as ‘Billy Elliot’. I took a shot from our trailer and a shot from the Billy Elliot film, the location and shot is very similar and so our location is clearly a classic convention of the social realism genre. Here are two more shots that I found to be similar, the backstreet brick wall location is a typical setting of a British Social realism film.
Another convention we used was the colour grading on our film which was dark and grey, with the colours reduced. This type of colour grading was found in other British social realism products we found such as the Kidulthood trailer. This trailer uses many conventions of British social realism just as we have used in ours. Not only is the colour grading dark and grey like ours but the locations used in this trailer are also typical British locations such as a street in London.  The clip from our trailer and the Kidulthood trailer are both of a similar, dull, grey colour.  The poster for Kidulthood also has a grey wash, just as the film does.
To make our genre really clear, we showed drugs and alcohol, typical conventions of the British social realism genre just as the Kidulthood trailer showed drugs and alcohol.   Shots from kidulthood A shot from Vendetta Drugs Alcohol
There is also a lot of violence shown in the Kidulthood trailer, just as there is in our trailer. I think violence is a typical convention of the social realism genre, however the violence we showed was also used to create excitement and action and to create tension in the trailer which would make the audience want to see the film.
    It was vital to follow these of conventions of the genre as a trailer is a product designed to make people want to watch the film and so it was vital to follow the genre conventions in order to make the genre of the film clear to the audience. This would therefore give the audience a sense of familiarity, which would make them interested in seeing the film. Although we used many typical conventions of the British social realism genre, we also did things new to the genre. For example, the storyline is about revenge rather than a social issue which is commonly central to a British social realism storyline. For example the storyline in the British social realism film ‘This is England’ revolves around the social issue of race and the storyline of ‘Kidulthood’ revolves around the social issue of bullying and street crime and violence.
‘The angry young man’ Protagonist... Another convention we broke was the sex of our protagonist. The typical protagonist of a British social realism film is ‘the angry young man’, whereas our character is ‘the angry young woman’.  This makes our film unique from other social realism films, making the audience want to watch the it. It also attracts a wider audience such as more females as the violence in a social realism film could put off women whereas as our character is female it attracts the female audience. Female Protagonists...
      When researching film posters and film magazines for our ancillary tasks we looked at films who had female protagonists such as kill bill as well as social realism film posters.  This is our first film poster. It was inspired by one of the trainspotting posters. The writing is many quotes and definitions of revenge which gives away what the film is about just as the trainspotting poster mentions drugs. The bold writing and black and white effect are also another typical conventions  of film posters.
This is our second film poster. It has many film poster conventions such as the logo which is the title ‘vendetta’.  It also has a set colour scheme of red black and white- a feature that many film posters have.  Finally, the picture is a location shot and one that appears in the film. This is a common convention as it helps establish the genre.
This is our magazine front cover. We did our own version of EMPIRE magazine. It has many of the same features as the real cover (below) such as the bold red title, a central protagonist character with the background being a setting from the film, many different sizes of font and a date, price and bar code. However there are some things we have differently such as the title of the film ‘vendetta’ is central on our cover whereas the real cover has the film title at the top. I think putting the title more central worked better as it allowed the reader to see exactly what was featured in the magazine and put more focus on the film. We also used more colour. We used blue, red, white and black font whereas the real cover just uses black white and red, I feel we needed more colour as the picture we used is duller and so the blue font stood out.  Overall I think all our ancillary tasks follow typical conventions which I feel is necessary as they are more recognisable to the audience and would therefore sell more.
    By breaking these conventions we have set our film apart from other British social realism films. It is vital to make a film ‘the same but different’ in order to attract the audience through familiarity but, make them want to watch it by showing it has something unique to offer, and by breaking those conventions we have shown our film has something unique to offer.

  • 2. The genre of our film trailer is British social realism. The social realism genre focuses on everyday social issues such as poverty. The locations used are usually deprived or typical areas of the middle/working class. The films of this genre often have negative resolutions and are very realistic.
