or a book. Practice in skimming will
help you learn to skip over
unimportant words so that you can
read faster.

•Scanning is high-speed reading.
When you scan, you have a question in
mind. You do not read every word, only
the words that answer your question.
Practice in scanning will help you learn
to skip over unimportant words (main
idea)so that you can read faster.

4. What is Intensive Reading?
•Intensive Reading is high-speed
reading. When you read intensively or
critically, you read for a specific word or
words for the question.

6. What is previewing and predicting?
There are two skills that are essential for a good
reader: Previewing and Predicting. When you gather
information about a book by examining its over, you
are previewing. The aim of previewing is to help you
predict or make some “educated guesses” about what
is in the book. Previewing and Predicting before you
read can make a big difference. You can get some ideas
about what you will read. That way you will begin to
process the information far more quickly. You will also
be able to follow the writer’s idea better. Though it
takes a few minutes to preview and predict, those few
minutes are well invested. You will find that later you
save reading time and gain comprehension.

7. What is Using Grammar to Guess
Word Meaning?
Another way context can help you guess is by
giving you information about the grammar. When
you find a word you do not know, look at the
grammatical structure of the sentence. I will tell
you about the function of the word – as a noun,
verb, pronoun, adjective, or adverb, etc. Then you
have a much narrower range of choices for
guessing the meaning.

8. What is Recognizing Words that
Connect Idea?
Do you ever find that you are understanding
words but not understand the writer’s ideas?
Sometimes this happens when you do not
pay attention to the words which connect
the ideas. These words are often short, but
important. Three useful kinds of words to
notice are pronouns, synonym, and
summary word.

9. What is Topic?
When you read for the meaning, you should
begin by looking for the topic. This helps
you connect what you read to what you
already know. In order to find the topic, ask
yourself:
–What is this about?
– What is the general idea?
