 Located to the northwest of Cancun, Mexico, Holbox Island is just 26
miles long. Holbox is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico by a
shallow lagoon which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos,
pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures.
 Most of the people of Holbox Island make their living fishing. It is
common to see fishermen walking through Holbox Village with their
catch of the day or carrying their nets. The streets of Holbox Island are
made of white sand, common of Caribbean islands, and there are very
few cars. Holbox is considered a virgin tourist destination because very
few outsiders visit the island. In spite of Holbox' natural beauty,
inaccessibility has left it unspoiled by mass tourism.
 Holbox, it is said, was inhabited by eight Maya families until the late
19th century, when it began to be settled by pirates who would come to
replenish their water supplies from the spring-fed freshwater lagoon on
the neighbouring islet of Yalahau. The town has a permanent
population of about 1,600 “and just three policemen”, people would tell
us, proof of how unusually safe it is for a Mexican beach town.

Chiquila, and has virtually no cars, with transport by most
residents and tourists by golf cart or moped. A small
airline, Aerosaab, flies tours to Holbox from Cancún and

 This is one of the safest beaches for learning how to
