Editor's Notes

  1. UPON RECEIPT OF THE PCR, HQMC WILL CONDUCT TELEPHONIC NOTIFICATION TO NOK (PRIMARY AND SECONDARY) BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 0500 AND 2400 LOCAL TIME. THE MARINE'S NOK WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A 24 HOUR TOLL FREE NUMBER (800-847-1597) TO CALL FOR UPDATES.  FOR VSI CASES, HQMC WILL CALL THE NOK TWICE DAILY TO PROVIDE UPDATED INFORMATION.  NOK OF SI MARINES WILL BE CALLED ONCE A DAY.  AFTER CONDUCTING TELEPHONIC NOTIFICATION TO A SAILOR'S NOK, HQMC WILL RELAY THE NOTIFICATION INFORMATION TO THE NAVY CASUALTY OFFICE (800-368-3202) FOR FOLLOW-UP AND APPROPRIATE ACTION. WITH REGARDS TO MARINES/SAILORS WHO ARE WIA BUT NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED (NSI), HQMC WILL MAKE NOTIFICATION UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY STATED ON THE PCR THAT THE "SNM HAS CONTACTED NOK AND DOES NOT DESIRE FURTHER NOTIFICATION" OR "SNM DOES NOT DESIRE NOK NOTIFICATION".  THE DESIRES OF THE MARINE/SAILOR WILL BE RESPECTED.
  2. CACO- CASUALTY ASSISTANCE CALLS OFFICER IN THE EVENT THAT A MARINE OR SAILOR IS KILLED IN ACTION OR VERY SERIOUSLY INJURED (IN MOST CASES), A CACO TEAM WILL BE ACTIVATED BY HQMC. THIS TEAM WILL CONSIST OF A CHAPLAIN AND A MARINE OR SAILOR OF EQUAL OR GREATER RANK THAN THE CASUALTY. THIS TEAM WILL GATHER ALL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CASUALTY AND THE INCIDENT AND LOCATE THE CASUALTIES NEXT OF KIN (NOK) AND NOTIFY THEM OF THE INCIDENT AND THE STATUS OF THE INJURED MARINE OR SAILOR. THE CACO TEAM WILL BE THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR THESE TYPES OF CASUALTIES.
