KA Crawford Province Council - Scholarship Presentation
1. KAPPA ALPHA ORDER SCHOLARSHIP ACHIEVEMENT: EXCELLENCE IS OUR AIM? CHAS JORDAN, ZN ‘02 DEPUTY PROVINCE COMMANDER FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS WILLIAM B. CRAWFORD PROVINCE
Introduce yourself, explain your position and your KA Career.
Answer: Grades. Remember the scene where Bluto and the other guys are in the Dean’s Office and Bluto has the pencil’s up his nose? Very simply, when it comes to the University, Grades are the end all, be all of whether a chapter should exist or not.
What did the dean say as they all stood in his office to Bluto? 0.0… Talk about your experience with grades as a Number I with the pledge class….
Who thinks of Studying like this? If I study, I don’t fail, if I don’t study I fail, but god all this studying is making me feel like I’m gonna fail…
Or who thinks of class like this….BOOM! I can’t take it anymore and your brain has imploded… Talk about your experiences, not studying, studying, working, not working…etc.
My best example to active chapters to represent the need for good Scholarship is Baseball….WHY?
Because Baseball represents how a Chapter should act towards scholarship…the entire chapter the TEAM needs to work together, help one another to succeed. But it still comes down to moments of INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT and ACCOMPLISHMENT
Answers: Scholarship – 30% 2.5 GPA Expectation: Higher than the All Frat and All Men’s NSO: Greg Singleton Duty: Maintain scholastic performance to get a degree.
KA Law establishes a 2.5 as the minimum expectation to push each member to excel and succeed.
Ask everyone if they like their badge…remind them they only get to wear it with a 2.5 GPA.
Poor Scholarship is grounds for probation by the National Officers.
In the Varlet it shows how the Chapter is responsible for the affairs of each brother and the mutual success of all.
The Executive Council has established this minimum expectation for all Active Chapters to live up to.
The Number I, as in all things, is ultimately responsible for the affairs of his Chapter. He needs to understand that while it is not an operational issue, grades need to be paramount on his list of actionable items every year. Good academic performance means better ability for the Number I to fulfill the other obligations of the chapter.
The Number II as Pledge Educator needs to be cognizant of the fact that the brothers most likely to have academic problems in KA are the pledges. He needs to build into his education program a means for the pledges to become academically successful while learning our required information.
The Number III as the Scholarship Officer needs to be a brother who can best represent the scholastic achievement of a Brother and empower the brothers of the Chapter to reach that same achievement.
The Faculty Advisor is your chapter’s best kept secret when it comes to academic performance. As a university official they can assist in navigating the business and politics of the college campus. They can work with faculty to discuss study programs and tutoring possibilities. This person should be a key member of your scholarship committee and almost the Number III’s best friend.
The KAOEF provides scholarships to academic leaders in the Fraternity. I am a great example of how these scholarships can benefit a brother. Talk about scholarships and effects on me…etc.
You are paying to go to college. If you do not mind your academic success, you are doing nothing more than flushing you and your parents money down the toilet.
