The Napoleonic Wars, The End of Slavery, the
British in India, and Revolt in Latin America
2. The Napoleonic Wars
1797-1815
• Napolean joined the French army at a young age, and his wit and
courage led to quick promotions. The new government feared his
popularity and power, and tried to keep him busy.
• In 1799, Napolean returned to France and seized control. He ruled 15
years, and in 1804 crowned himself emperor. He was a brilliant
general, brought new laws, a better education system, and a
reorganized government.
• Napolean used these powers to try and conquer Europe. He defeated
Austria and Russia, and soon after, Prussia. In 1805, Britain won a sea
battle-loosing their admiral but saving their land.
• After many battles, France was invaded and Napolean exiled. He died
in exile in 1821.
3. The End of Slavery
1792-1888
• Throughout the 1700s, Britain, France, and Spain grew rich on taxes
and profits from their colonies. Much of this wealth was from slave
labor.
• Historians estimate 45 million slaves were shipped between 1450 and
1870, but only 15 million survived-many died on the harsh voyage
across the Atlantic.
• Between 1777 and 1804, slavery was made illegal in the United States.
Denmark stopped the slave trade in 1792, and Britain in 1807.
Unfortunately, slave smuggling was still used and slavery was legal
elsewhere. After many revolts, battles, and campaigns, Cuba ended
slavery in 1886 and Brazil in 1888. In Africa, the slave trade was
finally abolished in 1873.
4. The British in India
1774-1858
• By 1750, the British East India Company controlled the very
profitable trade between Britain, India, and the Far East.
• Its officials were skilled businessmen and used knowledge of
Indian affairs to get what they wanted. However, some British
were attracted to their art, architecture, and culture, wearing
Indian clothes at home. Some learned the language, religion, or
writings.
• Sparked by a famine, trouble broke out in 1857. British were
massacred and was soon suppressed violently by the British
troops. British began living separate lives, and Indians were
“kept in their place.”
5. Revolt in Latin America
1808-1825
• The confused war period of Napolean gave the
colonies a chance to rebel. They fought against
Napolean’s brother Joseph as their new ruler and
king.
• Argentina declared itself free of Spanish rule in
1810, followed by Paraguay in 1811. Mexico
became independent in 1821, as did Peru. Brazil
finally broke free in 1822. Venezuela was freed in
1830.
