Magazine Evaluation
1.
2. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
•Identify forms and conventions of real
magazines
•How does your product use, develop or
challenge these forms and conventions?
My magazine has conventions of other magazines
because it has a barcode, magazine features, the
price, date, a main image and a masthead.
By creating your magazine and setting the
target audience to a different group of people
than most other magazines it’ll attract people
to see what’s so interesting about the magazine
(the hood).
3. ‘Misha B’ is a new artist
How does your media product represent and can have a influence
particular social groups? on others who read the
magazine. Ideally the
•What is representation? magazine is aimed at
males and females aged
•What social groups are you targeting? 17-23
•What representations do your
photographs construct? By mentioning other new
artists experience and
•What representations does your textual efforts it shows that the
content construct? magazine are interested in
their successes. Its also
•What representations does your design another way of helping
construct? others to go about getting
help to be an music artist.
The photographs presented
in my magazine are to
represent the ‘urban’ look.
Most youths are portrayed
in a negative way and
having a magazine to help
express themselves could
also change the public
mind set towards them.
4. The words used in the magazine
aren’t really to represent the
‘urban genre’ everything is
written clearly in the queens
English so that it is
understandable for everyone.
No slang or abbreviated words
are used.
As for layout and colours everything matches up. I
chose green white and black as the 3 main colours
(aside from pictures) to use. The double page spread
has all three colours and I have used them so that
the words are still clear and the font is still
readable.
Standard English in
green and black writing
with a white
background.
5. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
Who distributes magazines?
Who produced your example of an existing
magazine?
Where is your magazine likely to be sold?
Company’s such as Bauer and IPC
distribute some of the biggest
magazine labels. The magazine I
researched was ‘Kerrang’ and got
published by Bauer Consumer Media
as a monthly magazine distributed to
many country’s including : My magazine is aimed to be sold at various
Europe, Spain, South Africa etc… different shops like HMV Smith and even in
supermarkets such as ASDA’s Tesco’s and
Sainsbury’s .
6. Who would be the audience for your
media product?
•What is the audience for your magazine?
•What are their aspirations and how does
your magazine address these?
•What are their demographics?
My Target audience is youths aged between 17
and 23 who have aspirations in becoming a
artist. The magazines address’s their
aspirations by helping and giving websites and
ideas as to how to get further in the music
industry. Ideally its for people for working and
middle class people who live all around
London.
7. How did you attract/address your
audience?
•What specific techniques did you use?
•How did you manipulate representations?
•How did you select content?
By using bold black writing and
mainly black and white colours. Also
by putting well known and
recognisable artists on the contents
page with headlines and story
updates on the front page.
The layout and the photo’s are
set up that way to attract the
target audience. The photo’s
are brighter and bolder so that
the faces of the artists are
recognisable to people.
8. What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
product? I’ve learnt that in order to get your
What ranges of technologies are available? target audiences interest you have to
put things up that will attract there
What hardware and what software is interest. Bright colours recognisable

How difficult/easy are they to use? create a good

9. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full Bright colours, Detailed images and the
product? have you learned?
What skills
right terminology manipulate your target
audience into wanting to know what
What skills have you developed? your magazine is about.
What have you learned about planning?
What have you learned about
manipulation of representations?
Planning photographs and interviews
On InDesign I learnt how to was very easy for me as the artist I
create pages and textboxes interviewed is my brother so
and to fit content to screen arranging times places and dates
wasn’t very hard. Also interviewing
was simple because he’s not hard to
get into contact with and he fits the
description of an artist who was
once an ‘‘upcoming artist’’.
