1. Constraints
Every project gives you opportunities to create but also constraints to work to. Use this hand out to
consider the constraints which will affect your project.
Constraints
What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work?
For this project we have been set 3 weeks for production, in order to create our print products
both the advertising material and the packaging. So to make sure that work is complete to
deadline, planning is key making sure I have completed the appropriate schedule sheets and risk
assessments before production begins. Creating many a mock ups of my products so I have a
better idea when it comes to final production, making sure I address all possible ideas and themes.
A contingency plan is also very important especially within the deadline, in case possible problems
arise.
Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be provided with? How
could this affect your project? What can you do about this?
In terms of resources I will require, I will be able to source these from inside college, as this is
where I will spend most of my time set aside for production. with the products I aim to create I
may need a camera, and studio lighting if I decide to take my own photography or think it is
required, whether this be for a poster, billboard design or on the packaging of the product. I will
also need to use the photography editing software programme ‘Photoshop’ as I have used it in the
past and feel that it will be required in order to get my work to industry standard. To complement
this I may also use ‘indesign’ which works well for doing text work whether this be for magazine
article as this also will help to get it to professional standard.
What constraints are in place regarding your approach to marketing? Do you think this will help
of hinder your project and why?
I would have to monitor what I produced so that it would suit the needs of the target audience but
in the mean while wouldn’t cause harm or offence, as irn-bru are known for their adult and
sometimes controversial humour. Which some people like but have also put some people off the
product and therefore losing sales which could hinder the product I wish to create. As they already
have this image.
What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project?
An issue that will need to be looked at is the possible problems with copyright especially when
making products for an already existing brand, with conflicting views on the ownership of these
products, when re-branding. Looking at the cap code it Is also important to look at the sections
regarding;
Food
Misleading advertising
Harm and offense
Children
