S for life
Name: Nguyen Thai Truc Vy
Country: Viet Nam
Goal: Build the bridge between street children and society, be a story-teller
conveying street children’s wishes and helping them for a better life.
Date: 01/06
Attendee: Street children, the wealthy
People engaged in this event: Volunteer, enthusiastic people
BACKGROUND
• While new opportunities and economic benefits for many
developing countries have improved, there are ever-
increasing gaps between the rich and the poor, and between
rural and urban populations.
• Street children have not shared in many of the benefits of
the developments due to social and cultural divisions, and a
lack of basic social services and information that prioritize
street children.
• There is no place for them to express their wishes, stories,
scars, start-up ideas or just speak freely in public.
Nobody ever
listens to me!
RESEARCH
Does not know where his
or her next meal is coming
from.
Does not know where he or
she is spending the night.
He or she does not live with
either the mother or the
father.
Street children
(Homeless youth or so-called
street kids, street youth and
abandoned children)
• Over 400,000,000 abandoned children live on their own on the streets of
hundreds of cities around the world.(ISK, 2013)
• The exact number of street children is impossible to quantify, but it is likely that
the numbers are increasing. (Wiki)
UINICEF (2013)
FACTS
• Every 2 seconds, a child becomes an orphan.
• Every 14 seconds, a child is orphaned by AIDS.
• 1,000,000,000 of the world's families live on less than a dollar a day.
• Authorities estimate that child pornography is a $20 billion a year industry; too
many abandoned children end up as victims of this deviant activity.
• UNICEF estimates that nearly 1,000,000 children enter the sex trade every year.
• Experts also estimate that nearly 10,000,000 children are working as prostitutes,
with nearly 90% of them girls.
• According to the World Health Organization, malnutrition is the single biggest
contributor to child mortality rates worldwide.
• Many street children use a number of inhalants (glue, gasoline, lighter fluid) and
illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine and heroin).
• Street children are routinely detained illegally, beaten and tortured and
sometimes killed by police in some countries.
ISK, 2013
WHAT DOES “S” STAND FOR?
START-UP IDEAS
SPEAKER’S CORNER
SCAR
SUCCEED
STORY-TELLER
SOCIETY FOCUS
STREET CHILDREN
IDEAS BEHIND THIS EVENT
• Most of people hesitate to give money for a charity because
they do not know what/whom and how their money was
used.
• Most of street children have touching stories about their life,
their scars and at the same time, they cherish many start-up
ideas (for their future), wishes… but they have no chance to
share it with our society and somehow, we-who have a place
to live, a bed to sleep forgot them.
• People always have something to learn from others
(regardless of the rich, the poor or the young, the old).
• Street children need to be given more chances, taught more
skills to succeed in life.
WHAT IS “S FOR LIFE” ORGANISATION?
• It is obviously an non-profit organisation.
• A group of volunteers will walk along the street, infiltrate
street children’s life, listen to them and record their stories,
wishes, ideas.
• Organiser will form these stories into tap, video, article or
film… and publicize in Youtube, Blog, Facebook (Social media
channel in general) everyday!!!
• Event organisation is not only the charity organisation (for
fundraising purpose) but also the middleman, the speaker’s
corner and the story-teller – who listens to street children
and spreads the real-life stories of street children among
society.
WHAT IS “S FOR LIFE” EVENT?
• “S FOR LIFE” will be hold annually with free entry for
everyone who cares about street children.
• “S FOR LIFE” will be funded by donator, charitable
organisation, entrepreneur, the wealth… (who have already
watched/ seen/ known the published stories and are willing
to help).
• At the event, some typical stories through 365 days of year
will be exhibited and some street children will speak on the
stage in front of the guest.
• Fundraising will be collected during this event.
HOW DOES “S FOR LIFE” HELP THE YOUNG
GENERTATION?
• It will help the street children for better life in a different and more
applicable way.
• The money-giving people feel satisfy because they know that their
money will be used for the “REAL” situation with the “REAL”
children.
• The street children will have opportunities to speak properly in
front of many people, share enthusiastically about their life.
• We – the society will have something to learn from their stories, to
realize how lucky we are…
• The young generation (who have a place to settle down and always
complain about their situation) will broaden their views to “some
dark angles of life” and whereby respect their current life.
PLEASE GIVE STREET CHILDREN AN EQUAL
OPPORTUNITY!
