Current State - Question 1 How many of you are in exactly the right company, the right job and at the right rate of pay? Future State - Question 2 How many of you know where you would like to be in your professional career 5 years from now (May 24, 2010) and how you will get there? Well if you raised your hands for answering yes to both questions - finish your dessert and leave now. If you raised your hand and answered yes to Question 1 and not to Question 2 – Congratulations on the current state of your career - however, you need some focus on your future. If you didn’t raise your hand to either Question 1 or Question 2, you are among the millions of Americans who are not likely to achieve your career aspirations. AND PS - You Really need to be here!!!!!!!
I believe that in order to make strides to achieve in either your current or future career, you need to understand that the Career Transformation process equation is made up of 2 Parts Artistry and 1 Part Magic.
Artistry is characterized by superior skill(s) that can be learned (SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES) and a system of principles supported by taking action.
Step 1 - Know What You Want – Take free online assessments, ask others to tell you your competencies, write down your strengths, write your contributions and accomplishments. Step 2 - Brand Yourself Ask yourself: who am I, What do I stand for, etc. Give handout – Developing Your Brand Description Ask for a volunteer to Give their Brand Description Read my Brand Description Ask for volunteer to give their 90 second/Two Minute Commercial Develop several iterations of your Value Proposition to fit all Career Objectives/Targets/Areas of Expertise.
In 2002, I was in the right company, at close to the right rate of pay, but not doing what I was Born to Do. I wrote a Career Transformation Plan to get from Managing Consultant with DBM, the world’s leading Career Transition Company to being an Executive Coach (a writer, speaker and owning an Executive Coaching Practice). Well, I am Executive Coach at DBM, I’m writing two books, I am a speaker, I have been quoted in Career Journal, Dallas Morning News, Newark NJ Star Ledger and I have my own personal coaching business in addition to my corporate role. I am a Founding member of the International Association of Coaching, a member of the Institute for Management Consultants, Coachville, The National Association of Corporate Directors, The Boardroom Group, the Southwest Venture Forum, and The Directors Forum.
Show my Portfolio Networking with a purpose: Identify networking targets, develop your branding, develop your message. Say thank you. 7 Touch Model – A new contact needs 7 touches in order to become a champion: calls, meetings, emails with something of interest/substance for the reader, offering to assist, etc. Give example of me and Keith. Taking Action – Hold up a $20 bill. Ask who wants it. Use Jack Canfield example – play it out. Practice Unconscious Competence. Why did only XXXXXXXXX come up and take the bill out of my hand? What was going through your mind? I was embarrassed. I thought someone else needed the money more. What would people think? I didn’t know what you intended. Use the examples to illustrate that these are the same reasons we don’t take action! Did you know that the number 1 limiting belief that prevents people from achieving their goals is AGE. Yet Venture Capitalists know that the best entrepreneur is the person age 55 or Older. 73% of individuals who start a business at age 55+ are successful.
Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action. Napoleon Hill
I stated this presentation by saying that the Career Transformation Process Equation was 2 Parts Artistry and 1 Part Magic. Magic is serendipitous. It operates when you least expect it. It offers you opportunities where opportunities by all the laws of physics and the laws of LIFE, indicate that there should be no opportunity. The Magic of the Career Transformation often involves OTHER PEOPLE!
Your Gang or Posse is a group of individuals who know you, your goals and your value proposition are your best champions. They become your Gang, Posse or Board of Directors. Select individuals with a different skill set, competencies and network than yours. One person or 5 or 10 or 20. Do what’s right for you. Ask for what you want….You’d be surprised at how often you get what you ask for.
Where do you want to be 5 years from now? Thank you very much.
