The University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service ( IPS) created the Tennessee Renewable Energy & Economic Development Council (TREEDC) in 2008 to help connect renewable energy initiatives with economic development opportunities for communities . TREEDC started with 4 rural cities scattered across the state. TREEDC has grown into an international organization with 96 mayors and 30 Universities that collaborate together to create a path to fast track renewable energy worldwide. The TREEDC International Exchange Program expands the scope of TREEDC’s mission of connecting renewable energy with economic development. The International Exchange Program was created in 2012 to help cultivate technology and informational exchange among TREEDC’s members with international counterparts. The major objectives are information and technology exchange between sister cities and colleges, showcase Tennessee technology providers , promote social responsibility, and to replicate the TREEDC model worldwide. Five (5) countries were selected and the Philippines was chosen as the Pilot Country for Tennessee to connect to the rest of the world in advancing renewable energy. Today, there are 8 Philippine cities and 12 universities that have enrolled into the Program. This initiative has produced 5 educational forums across the country, provided typhoon relief assistance and has facilitated solar development, waste to energy and pico-hydro development in the rural areas of the country. The University has generated more positive recognition worldwide as an innovator in outreach and Tennessee renewable energy businesses have secured new customers in the Philippines. This has become a win-win for all parties involved.

This presentation was given by Lini Wollenberg, Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT and the Gund Institute for Environment at the University of Vermont, on 11 November 2022 at COP27. The event, CompensACTION: Making compensation mechanisms work for small-scale agricultural producers, was hosted at the Food Systems Pavilion and organized by Clim-EAT. The G7 Food Security Working Group believes that agricultural producers, especially smallholders in developing countries, should receive adequate compensation for their services. This means creating incentive systems that complement revenues from market prices with compensation for generating positive externalities.

Carbon projects with smallholder farmers in developing countries have begun to emerge to take advantage of carbon-finance to support the broader benefits of climate-smart agriculture (Goldstein and Gonzalez 2014; Deshmukh, Sosis, and Pinjuv 2014). But problems remain with high costs of project development, risk management, and securing benefits for smallholder farmers (Shames, Buck, and Scherr 2011) Strengthening local institutional capacity in 4 KEY AREAS could increase long-term development benefits, reduce project costs and help initiatives to scale up (Shames, et al 2013).

The Accelerating Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project works to deliver a climate-smart African future driven by science and innovation in agriculture. AICCRA does this by enhancing access to climate information services and climate-smart agricultural technology to millions of smallholder farmers in Africa. With better access to climate technology and advisory services—linked to information about effective response measures—farmers can better anticipate climate-related events and take preventative action that help communities better safeguard their livelihoods and the environment. AICCRA is supported by a grant from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank, which is used to enhance research and capacity-building activities by the CGIAR centers and initiatives as well as their partners in Africa. About IDA: IDA helps the world’s poorest countries by providing grants and low to zero-interest loans for projects and programmes that boost economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve poor people’s lives. IDA is one of the largest sources of assistance for the world’s 76 poorest countries, 39 of which are in Africa. Annual IDA commitments have averaged about $21 billion over circa 2017-2020, with approximately 61 percent going to Africa.

Presentation by Han Soethoudt, Jan Broeze, and Heike Axmann of Wageningen University & Resaearch (WUR). WUR and Olam Rice Nigeria conducted a controlled experiment in Nigeria in which mechanized rice harvesting and threshing were introduced on smallholder farms. The result of the study shows that mechanization considerably reduces losses, has a positive impact on farmers’ income, and the climate. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
