Survey of Career Service Professionals

              January, 2012
Background to the Research Process

CERIC’s past research activities:

    -Survey of Career Service Professionals (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006).
-General population survey about career development and workplace perceptions
(Conducted by Ipsos/Reid in 2006 by telephone and in 2007 on-line).

CERIC’s new rotating research initiatives (2 year cycle):

-The “Survey on public perceptions about career development and the workplace” was
conducted on-line in November, 2010 by Environics Research Group. Findings were
    released in January, 2011.
-The “Survey of Career Service Professionals” was conducted on-line in
    October/November, 2011. Highlights were released at Cannexus12 (January 23-25,
    2012).

                                                                                         2
Developing the investigative instrument

Step 1: Reviewed the 2006 Survey of Careers Service Professionals to identify opportunities
to present longitudinal findings; updated the content to reflect contemporary conditions (i.e.
economic conditions; changes in the field and the respective sectors; and new technology)
and current CERIC program realities.

Step 2: Members of CERIC Committees provided feedback on the original set of questions.
The final set included 66 questions representing six thematic categories (80% close-ended
with drop down options).

                      -Demographic Section (19 questions)
-CERIC and its Programs (9 questions)
-Professional Development and Learning (14 questions)
                      -Research (9 questions)
                      -Career Capacity/Mobility (7 questions)
-Technology Access and Awareness (8 questions)

                                                                                             3
Survey Execution, Data Interpretation and
           Knowledge Transfer

i- Survey roll-out and management: The on-line platform was deployed on October 14 across CERIC
lists. The survey was also disseminated by supporting organizations. Aggregate responses were
monitored throughout the process to detect any statistical anomalies that might contradict distribution
expectations (by gender, location, field and/or sectors). Several “survey pushes” were initiated to
ensure a representative cohort. The survey closed on November 18.

ii- What we can say about the findings: The survey was completed by 1,013 career service
professionals. CERIC committee members examined the demographic information to assess the
representativeness of the sample. It is their opinion that the breakdown fairly represents the
composition of the field and its respective sectors. As such, it is fair to say that the findings provide a
reliable snapshot of the career service professional community.

iii- Knowledge dissemination plan: Highlights of the findings were presented in January, 2012 at
Cannexus12. A Highlights Report in French and English was made available at that time. Thematic
articles will be presented in The Bulletin over the upcoming year exploring some of the findings more
closely (for instance, a longitudinal perspective comparing responses from 2006 to 2011; across
sectors; by job function; or by age group).

Survey of Career Service Professionals Highlights

  • 1. Survey of Career Service Professionals January, 2012
  • 2. Background to the Research Process CERIC’s past research activities: -Survey of Career Service Professionals (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). -General population survey about career development and workplace perceptions (Conducted by Ipsos/Reid in 2006 by telephone and in 2007 on-line). CERIC’s new rotating research initiatives (2 year cycle): -The “Survey on public perceptions about career development and the workplace” was conducted on-line in November, 2010 by Environics Research Group. Findings were released in January, 2011. -The “Survey of Career Service Professionals” was conducted on-line in October/November, 2011. Highlights were released at Cannexus12 (January 23-25, 2012). 2
  • 3. Developing the investigative instrument Step 1: Reviewed the 2006 Survey of Careers Service Professionals to identify opportunities to present longitudinal findings; updated the content to reflect contemporary conditions (i.e. economic conditions; changes in the field and the respective sectors; and new technology) and current CERIC program realities. Step 2: Members of CERIC Committees provided feedback on the original set of questions. The final set included 66 questions representing six thematic categories (80% close-ended with drop down options). -Demographic Section (19 questions) -CERIC and its Programs (9 questions) -Professional Development and Learning (14 questions) -Research (9 questions) -Career Capacity/Mobility (7 questions) -Technology Access and Awareness (8 questions) 3
  • 4. Survey Execution, Data Interpretation and Knowledge Transfer i- Survey roll-out and management: The on-line platform was deployed on October 14 across CERIC lists. The survey was also disseminated by supporting organizations. Aggregate responses were monitored throughout the process to detect any statistical anomalies that might contradict distribution expectations (by gender, location, field and/or sectors). Several “survey pushes” were initiated to ensure a representative cohort. The survey closed on November 18. ii- What we can say about the findings: The survey was completed by 1,013 career service professionals. CERIC committee members examined the demographic information to assess the representativeness of the sample. It is their opinion that the breakdown fairly represents the composition of the field and its respective sectors. As such, it is fair to say that the findings provide a reliable snapshot of the career service professional community. iii- Knowledge dissemination plan: Highlights of the findings were presented in January, 2012 at Cannexus12. A Highlights Report in French and English was made available at that time. Thematic articles will be presented in The Bulletin over the upcoming year exploring some of the findings more closely (for instance, a longitudinal perspective comparing responses from 2006 to 2011; across sectors; by job function; or by age group). 4
