Greek Architecture • Parthenon – Temple in Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena. (Greek goddess of war and wisdom) • Completed in 438 B.C.E. • Parthenon has also served as a Christian church as well as an Islamic temple.
Greek Architecture Vocabulary • Frieze - Section of carvings between the pediment and the architrave. • Pediment- Flat triangular area at each end of building • Architrave –The lintel which stretches across the tops of the columns • Cornice – Border around the pediment • Column – Vertical pole which supports the weight of a buildings roof. In Ancient Greece there were three types.

Greek Sculptures • Greek sculptures were created from bronze. • Greek sculptures were usually representations of their gods. • Many of the Greek artworks which have survived are marble Roman copies. • This artwork is often called god from the sea, because it was rescued from the Artemision sea.

  • 4. Greek Architecture • Parthenon – Temple in Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena. (Greek goddess of war and wisdom) • Completed in 438 B.C.E. • Parthenon has also served as a Christian church as well as an Islamic temple.

Greek Architecture Vocabulary • Frieze - Section of carvings between the pediment and the architrave. • Pediment- Flat triangular area at each end of building • Architrave –The lintel which stretches across the tops of the columns • Cornice – Border around the pediment • Column – Vertical pole which supports the weight of a buildings roof. In Ancient Greece there were three types.

Greek Sculptures • Greek sculptures were created from bronze. • Greek sculptures were usually representations of their gods. • Many of the Greek artworks which have survived are marble Roman copies. • This artwork is often called god from the sea, because it was rescued from the Artemision sea.
