Hospitality @ Ntec
The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing areas of our economy. A
career in hospitality is fun, exciting, creative, and offers worldwide employment
opportunities. National Technology Institute (NTI) holds Service IQ accreditation,
and is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) to deliver
hospitality qualifications.
Why Study at NTI?
NTI delivers national qualifications designed by and for the industry, which
ensures that the course content is always relevant and current. Our students
and graduates are in demand. Many hotels, restaurants and bars employ our
students part-time during their course and offer full-time work after graduation.
Employers believe our students have the skills, knowledge and attitude that will
make them successful managers. The courses are a mix of theory and practical
work with work experience throughout the course in our two cafes. As NTI has
two commercial cafes students are able to visit industry trade shows, and along
with frequent industry visits and guest speakers, students are able to network
with potential New Zealand and international employers.
We support students in additional activities outside of their course work such as
industry competitions. Students have been very successful in both the regional
and national 2013 Culinary Fare competitions, with all ten students who entered
the barista and classic cocktail sections for the 2013 National Fare winning

Studying at FutureCOL was really fun.
We were mentored by experienced
chefs who shared their knowledge both
inside and outside the classroom. They
not only taught us what was required in
the industry, but also tricks and tips on
how to do things efficiently as well. We
were also lucky to have trips outside the
college - we visited industrial kitchens
which run big events not only in Hawke’s
Bay but also in other parts of New
Zealand.

National Diploma in Computing – Level 5
New Zealand has a better life standard and is more peaceful compared
to my country. It also has a high education standard. The tutors are nice,
supportive and very understanding. I really enjoyed my time in class. The
staff have helped me by giving me information on jobs. Hawke's Bay is a
good and calm place to study. There are a lot of orchards so it is a little bit
easier to get seasonal work.

‘Chance Favours the Prepared Mind’
						 - Louis Pasteur
Opportunities will come to those whose minds are prepared and ready. Realisation
of oneself, therefore, is the key to a successful and fulfilling career and indeed,
life.
The Professional Skills Development (PSD) programme is best summed up by this
statement. PSD is designed to be an integral part of all Ntec Diploma courses.
The learning outcomes of the programme are to provide students with an
understanding of the New Zealand way of life, develop a greater awareness of
self and hence gain confidence, job search and employability skills.
The programme is designed to engage all learning senses. It is taught using
activities like games, role play, as well as using videos. PSD has its own dedicated
Facebook page: NTEC Professional Skills Development Programme.
Following are some comments extracted from student feedback:
“Above excellent (course rating) is the honest feedback, not trying to make
anyone happy. It was the best learning experience I ever had. Well done with the
design and implementation of this programme.”
“This is a very good (programme) to teach students because in this way we can’t
feel homesick and people from different countries can understand by ‘eyes, ears
and heart’. I can say that‘PSD is a great class for international students’.”
“The programme is very good. All the things we learnt in this course are very
valuable. It is very helpful to improve our personality and communication skills.
The method which they used to teach is excellent. I always recommend to other
students to join this course if they want to improve their personality.”
Ntec believes that the education of our students goes beyond the technical
knowledge and skills of their Diploma courses. Our students need to be better
learners and after graduating, to be work-ready employees. The PSD programme
provides for this and it is our way of showing our students that we believe in
giving them a holistic learning experience.

Ntec Toastmasters International Club - Youth Leadership Programme
The purpose of Toastmasters International
and its Youth Leadership Programme is to
provide an opportunity for people to come
together, share ideas and to improve in
areas, such as :
• The ability to structure their
thoughts into a coherent and well
organised speech
• To think on their feet
• Improve organisational and
leadership skills
• Gain confidence in public speaking
Ntec has the fortunate opportunity of
providing a Toastmasters platform to its
students, many of whom are international.
Students are thus able to be involved in
these programmes as well as have the
opportunity to meet and network with
others.
At the Ntec Toastmasters sessions
participants not only get the opportunity
to present their speeches in front of a
group, they also get the chance to present
in front of invited guests such as the
Toastmasters Area Governor and other
Qualified Toastmasters who often visit the
club.
On completion of the Toastmasters
International programme, students
are awarded a certificate which is
internationally recognised and testifies to
their abilities as competent communicators
and effective leaders.
Ntec is a partner and sponsor for the New Zealand Innovation
Centre. NZIC meets a specific and targeted need for new migrants,
international students and graduates. NZIC gets highly qualified and
competent migrants into wealth creation and international student
graduates into productive work/research/business development.
NZIC works collaboratively with all stakeholders and with other
innovation centres to ensure that our centre provides the best
opportunities for our target group.
NZIC identifies the skills and expertise that migrants bring with
them to this country and provides them with an opportunity to
build further on these skills for the benefit of themselves and the
future of New Zealand.
The aims of NZIC include:
• Commercialising ideas
• Encouraging and assisting inventors, in the research,

Orientation
On arrival in New Zealand students attend an orientation
programme. This is an opportunity to meet the staff and fellow
students, receive useful course information, and find out more
about life in New Zealand. Orientation includes an introduction
to the various aspects of living in New Zealand covering social
services such as health services and counselling that are available
to students.
Student trips and social activities
Special activities organised for students include horse riding, sailing,
bush walks, ice skating, barbecues and parties.
Multi-cultural festivities
Our students come from many different countries and Ntec ensures
that its students are able to enjoy all the festivities that take place
around the world, in New Zealand. Festivals such as Diwali, known
as the “Festival of Light”, may be celebrated with music and
dance and a light meal in the college café. Each year thousands
of Aucklanders attend the Chinese Lantern Festival. The festival
is one of the events in a series of Chinese New Year celebrations,
and includes food stalls, crafts, fireworks and martial arts displays.
Careers Fair
Ntec recognises that many students need to find employment both
for professional development and to help with living expenses. Each
year several Careers Fairs are held, and students are encouraged
to attend these. Students are able to find out from the various
exhibitors about career choices and potential employers.

  • 36. ‘Chance Favours the Prepared Mind’ - Louis Pasteur Opportunities will come to those whose minds are prepared and ready. Realisation of oneself, therefore, is the key to a successful and fulfilling career and indeed, life. The Professional Skills Development (PSD) programme is best summed up by this statement. PSD is designed to be an integral part of all Ntec Diploma courses. The learning outcomes of the programme are to provide students with an understanding of the New Zealand way of life, develop a greater awareness of self and hence gain confidence, job search and employability skills. The programme is designed to engage all learning senses. It is taught using activities like games, role play, as well as using videos. PSD has its own dedicated Facebook page: NTEC Professional Skills Development Programme. Following are some comments extracted from student feedback: “Above excellent (course rating) is the honest feedback, not trying to make anyone happy. It was the best learning experience I ever had. Well done with the design and implementation of this programme.” “This is a very good (programme) to teach students because in this way we can’t feel homesick and people from different countries can understand by ‘eyes, ears and heart’. I can say that‘PSD is a great class for international students’.” “The programme is very good. All the things we learnt in this course are very valuable. It is very helpful to improve our personality and communication skills. The method which they used to teach is excellent. I always recommend to other students to join this course if they want to improve their personality.” Ntec believes that the education of our students goes beyond the technical knowledge and skills of their Diploma courses. Our students need to be better learners and after graduating, to be work-ready employees. The PSD programme provides for this and it is our way of showing our students that we believe in giving them a holistic learning experience.
