our community. As a group, we are also having an Eco-

The Herald March/April 2012

  • 1. HERALD CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK, TORONTO, CANADA VOLUME 38, NUMBER 1
  • 2. CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK MARCH/APRIL 2012 Kevin’s HERALD Corner HERALD is published six times a year (Sept, Oct/Nov, Dec/Jan, Feb/Mar, Apr/May, June/July) by Christ Church Deer Park 1570 Yonge Street Toronto ON M4T 1Z8 Dear friends, Tel: 416.920.5211 Fax: 416.920.8400 FOR MANY YEARS, THE FIRST WEEKEND OF APRIL marked the beginning of Daylight www.thereslifehere.org Saving Time. But a few years ago, the “spring forward” was moved to the second We welcome your submissions. weekend in March. What a wonderful change to be able to enjoy daylight into the E-mail: jking@thereslifehere.org evening, even though it is still officially winter! or the editor (e-mail below). The lengthening of days means that Easter is near, and it’s no coincidence that we PARISH CLERGY always celebrate Easter in the spring. While historians and Biblical scholars debate Rector The Rev. Kevin Robertson the actual date of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, Christians have been content Assistant Curate to celebrate Easter in the season that makes the most sense to us. In spring, the The Rev. Samantha Caravan flowers bloom, the trees bud and birds return to their nests; the earth comes back Honorary Assistants to life after the barrenness of winter. This new life all around us reflects the life that The Rev. Dr. Peter Slater The Rev. Canon Dr. David Neelands we celebrate in the resurrection. As the earth rises again after winter, we celebrate The Rev. Dr. Karen Hamilton, Jesus rising to life from his death on the cross. Ecumenical Partner The Rev. Michael Marshall, Many people have written about the relationship between Easter and spring. Hospital for Sick Children I think Christina Rossetti’s poem captures the connection particularly well: Organist & Director of Music Eric Robertson Spring bursts today, for Christ is risen and all the earth’s at play. Director of Children’s Education Flash forth, thou Sun, the rain is over and gone, its work is done. Hilary Keachie Winter is past, sweet spring is come at last, is come at last. CORPORATION Bud, Fig and Vine, fat with fruit and oil and wine. Rector’s Warden (Property) Break forth this morn in roses, thou but yesterday a thorn. Walter Blackwell People’s Warden (Finance) Uplift thy head, O pure white lily thro’ the winter dead. Robert Morrow Beside your dams leap and rejoice, you merry-making Lambs. Deputy Warden (Human Resources) All herds and flocks rejoice, all beasts of thickets and rock. Carolyn Kearns Member-at-Large (Parish Forum) Sing, creatures, sing, angels and men and birds and everything. Genevieve Chornenki All notes of doves fill all our world: this is the time of loves. Christina G. Rossetti EDITORIAL COMMITTEE The Complete Poems (MacMillan, 1933) Editor Joyce Hamilton (joyceian@sympatico.ca) In our own lives, we all experience winter and spring, darkness and light, sadness Members and joy, death and new life. As disciples of the Risen Christ, our faith invites us to Henry Zaluski, MJ Rosenthal, see the Easter story unfolding in our midst. The empty tomb on Easter morning Photos: Deirdre Malone, Henry Zaluski, Peter Curzon, Kate Rieger means that winter is never the last season, that death is never the final state. New Webmaster life is always ready to spring up for us, because God invites us to share in the risen Brian Dench life of Christ. PARISH STAFF The unfolding drama that we are about to celebrate makes sense only if we enter Parish Administrator & Rector’s Assistant Jean King into it fully. I hope you will join us at Christ Church Deer Park during Holy Week Sexton and Easter as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and celebrate the new life we have Denis Delisle in him. The Reverend Kevin Robertson, Rector 2 / HERALD

I was particularly struck by the beautiful The Christmas Pageant abstract artwork the kids created as I recited aloud a prayer composed by Blessed Hildegard of Bingen. It seemed fitting to listen and paint her prayer as we had learned all about her life and legacy during our October Saints Unit. The kids really got into this activity and I hope to continue to visualize and paint prayers, perhaps culminating in a Epiphany... PromiseLand Painted Prayer book.
