SAT vocabulary practice

1. (YEU-luh-jee) A speech or writing in praise of a person or thing, especially a set oration in honor of a deceased person. Tatiana gave a eulogy about her deceased aunt that touched everyone's heart.

2. (YEU-feh-mism) The substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. Saying something that is usually thought of as negative in an indirect way. Everybody knows the pointed cone hat is a euphemism for stupidity.

3. (egh-ZAS-uhr-bayt) To increase the severity, bitterness, or violence of (disease, ill feeling, etc.); aggravate. To embitter the feelings of (a person); irritate; exasperate. Juan Sebastian exacerbated the situation of getting a zero for cheating by arguing with the teacher; in the end, he also got a detention.

4. (ehg-ZEHM-pluh-ree) Worthy of imitation; commendable. Serving as a model or pattern. An example of an exemplary behavior is helping old ladies cross the street.

5. (ehg-ZAHS-tiv) Comprehensive; thoroughly. At the airport the police went through Valentina´s luggage exhaustively looking for drugs.

6. ( egh-ZAHN-er-ayt ) To clear, as of an accusation; free from guilt or blame; exculpate. To relieve, as from an obligation, duty, or task . Tatiana was exonerated from all charges and set free.

7. (ehks-PEE-dee-ehnt) Martha expeditiously organizes all files and documents. Acting or done with speed and efficiency.

8. (ehks-PLIS-it) Fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated; leaving nothing merely implied; unequivocal. Although the non-smoking sign was explicit , Santiago obviously decided to ignore it.

9. (ehks-TOHL) Glorify, exalt, celebrate. Mr. Loaiza extolled the academic performance of several students during the flag raising.
