                                                                                                                          Annual Report 2011
                                                                                                                          Annual Report 2011
During 2011 the CBC continued progress toward enhancing the quality of its program activities
and developing its staff/volunteer base. These efforts resulted in positively impacting the life skills
development of the youth we serve. We developed a stronger financial foundation through sup-
port of foundation grants, developing relationships with our individual and corporate donors,
continuing our bike safety education work through a Maine Department of Transportation con-
tract, and growing our silent auction benefit.

On the personnel front we completed our transition from several supportive years of AmeriCorps
and AmeriCorps*VISTA members to three full-time staff focused on sustaining mission-focused
programs, resource development, and community relations efforts. Our direct-service volunteer
base spent more time developing mentoring relationships with the kids we serve. Consistent staff
members and dedicated volunteers directly resulted in positive mentoring outcomes with kids.

In 2011 we were recognized by Kids Free to Grow (aka Child Abuse Prevention Council of York
County) with their Friend of York County's Children Award. We increased our community
outreach through efforts including implementing a mobile bike repair outreach station we call
Bike Doctor. As you will read, our core program activities resulting in kids cycling more miles with
us, having more enrichment experiences outside of the four walls of the CBC, and learning what it
means to give back to others. Kids are increasing their developmental assets.

Thank you for the support of our staff, volunteers, and community in providing opportunities for
youth to grow! Take care and watch out for what we have planned for 2012.

                                                                                                 Sincerely,
                                                                                                  i

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: Sophia & Devyn Hibbard

                                                                                                                Annual Report 2011
Sophia and Devyn Hibbard couldn’t have guessed that they were both one step closer to forming life alter-
ing lifestyle changes and resiliency skills every time they hauled their bicycle down three flights of apart-
ment building stairs to get to CBC. They initially joined because it seemed “fun” and now, five years later,
Sophia, Devyn, and their parents are still amazed at the impact CBC programs have had on their lives.

During a recent doctor’s visit, Sophia learned that her chronic asthma, something she had struggled with all
her life, had been significantly reduced to bronchial spasms. According to her doctor, Sophia’s ability to
overcome asthma is a direct result of her health, fitness, and nutrition changes made through CBC bike rides,
indoor cycling classes, and Trek Across Maine training rides.

When Devyn was losing interest in schoolwork and overwhelmed at a new school, one of his teachers
noticed that he was motivated by bikes and bike mechanics learned at CBC. His teacher was able to
re-engage Devyn in school by adapting the lessons to meet Devyn’s interest in bikes. Devyn experienced
success at school and, more importantly, discovered his personal learning style.

Sophia and Devyn’s parents are grateful for opportunities provided through CBC and are quick to tell people
that the CBC mentors and volunteers may not be “family by blood, but they are a family through bikes!”

Our programs engage youth and adult community members in asset-building experiences
through the following program activities that span accessibility to safe bikes, bicycle riding safety, and
community service initiatives. We operate year-round, five to six days a week with expanded program-
ming during the summer months to meet the needs of kids during the summer.

Bike Monkeys Training: Bike Monkeys, our signature program that matches adult mentors with youth
during an eight-week formal bike repair course, expanded to include a girls-only version. Six boys and
seven girls graduated with the help of over fifteen mentors committed to their success. Bike Monkey
graduates “give back” through outreach projects, and passing their knowledge onto new volunteers and
younger children during Earn-a-Bike sessions. One 2010 graduate continued to develop his bike repair
and leadership skills by co-facilitating the 2011 coed Bike Monkey program.

Bike Ride Adventures*: During the summer and shouldering seasons, kids gathered at the shop three
(sometimes four) days a week to learn safe cycling skills during group road, mountain bike, and tandem
rides. CBC cyclists explored York County by bicycle, taking advantage of new trail systems and breaking
personal mileage and fitness goals. Fifty kids pedaled nearly 10,000 cumulative miles during 79 bike rides.
Seven kids reached the 500 Mile Club, three kids reached the 750 Mile Club, and one twelve-year old
reached the 1,000 Mile Club and rode on to be the first member of the 2,000 Mile Club! A few kids learned
how to captain tandems for their CBC friends during group rides.

Girls’ Empowerment Group: The CBC’s all-girls bike riding club rode every Friday during its April-
October season, averaging five girls per session. While pedaling nearly 2,500 cumulative miles, partici-
pants connected with other girls and developed relationships with positive female role models in the
community. Girls practiced bike repair skills learned during girls-only Bike Monkeys, cycled the 25 mile loop
in the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Women’s Ride in Freeport, and overcame physical challenges during
weekly bike rides. Sixteen girls and women learned how to responsibly build fires, explore tide pools, and
kayak during the group’s third annual camping trip.

Trek Across Maine Cycling Team: For the 12th consecutive year, our youth/adult charity cycling
team trained, fundraised, and cycled in the 180-mile, three-day Trek Across Maine for the American Lung
Association of New England. Ten kids and their mentors (four tandems, one quad bicycle, and four single
road bikes!) completed the Trek along with 30 adult team members. The camaraderie of this diverse team
contributed to improved healthy living habits, developing safe group cycling and bike repair skills, and
promoted fundraising for this invaluable community organization. Since 2000, approximately 306 CBC
team members have raised over $196,000 for lung health initiatives.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

We hope the following words express our genuine thanks. Thank you to the volunteers, donors, and
the Maine Department of Transportation for generously contributing your time, money, and skills to serve
the developmental asset needs of kids in northern York County through the Community Bicycle Center.
Volunteers and donors are the backbone of the CBC, without whom our lifeskills programs would not be
possible. In 2011 alone, you helped us serve over 300 kids through our onsite programs and over 1,500
kids and families through our outreach efforts. Kids were more successful in relationships, in their families,
during school and in our community because of you. Thank you!!!

  • 2. Community Bicycle Center | page 2 NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Annual Report 2011 Annual Report 2011 During 2011 the CBC continued progress toward enhancing the quality of its program activities and developing its staff/volunteer base. These efforts resulted in positively impacting the life skills development of the youth we serve. We developed a stronger financial foundation through sup- port of foundation grants, developing relationships with our individual and corporate donors, continuing our bike safety education work through a Maine Department of Transportation con- tract, and growing our silent auction benefit. On the personnel front we completed our transition from several supportive years of AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps*VISTA members to three full-time staff focused on sustaining mission-focused programs, resource development, and community relations efforts. Our direct-service volunteer base spent more time developing mentoring relationships with the kids we serve. Consistent staff members and dedicated volunteers directly resulted in positive mentoring outcomes with kids. In 2011 we were recognized by Kids Free to Grow (aka Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County) with their Friend of York County's Children Award. We increased our community outreach through efforts including implementing a mobile bike repair outreach station we call Bike Doctor. As you will read, our core program activities resulting in kids cycling more miles with us, having more enrichment experiences outside of the four walls of the CBC, and learning what it means to give back to others. Kids are increasing their developmental assets. Thank you for the support of our staff, volunteers, and community in providing opportunities for youth to grow! Take care and watch out for what we have planned for 2012. • 4. Community Bicycle Center | page 4 YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: Sophia & Devyn Hibbard Annual Report 2011 Sophia and Devyn Hibbard couldn’t have guessed that they were both one step closer to forming life alter- ing lifestyle changes and resiliency skills every time they hauled their bicycle down three flights of apart- ment building stairs to get to CBC. They initially joined because it seemed “fun” and now, five years later, Sophia, Devyn, and their parents are still amazed at the impact CBC programs have had on their lives. During a recent doctor’s visit, Sophia learned that her chronic asthma, something she had struggled with all her life, had been significantly reduced to bronchial spasms. According to her doctor, Sophia’s ability to overcome asthma is a direct result of her health, fitness, and nutrition changes made through CBC bike rides, indoor cycling classes, and Trek Across Maine training rides. When Devyn was losing interest in schoolwork and overwhelmed at a new school, one of his teachers noticed that he was motivated by bikes and bike mechanics learned at CBC. His teacher was able to re-engage Devyn in school by adapting the lessons to meet Devyn’s interest in bikes. Devyn experienced success at school and, more importantly, discovered his personal learning style. Sophia and Devyn’s parents are grateful for opportunities provided through CBC and are quick to tell people that the CBC mentors and volunteers may not be “family by blood, but they are a family through bikes!” Our programs engage youth and adult community members in asset-building experiences through the following program activities that span accessibility to safe bikes, bicycle riding safety, and community service initiatives. We operate year-round, five to six days a week with expanded program- ming during the summer months to meet the needs of kids during the summer. • 5. Community Bicycle Center | page 5 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS CONTINUED Annual Report 2011 Bike Monkeys Training: Bike Monkeys, our signature program that matches adult mentors with youth during an eight-week formal bike repair course, expanded to include a girls-only version. Six boys and seven girls graduated with the help of over fifteen mentors committed to their success. Bike Monkey graduates “give back” through outreach projects, and passing their knowledge onto new volunteers and younger children during Earn-a-Bike sessions. One 2010 graduate continued to develop his bike repair and leadership skills by co-facilitating the 2011 coed Bike Monkey program. Bike Ride Adventures*: During the summer and shouldering seasons, kids gathered at the shop three (sometimes four) days a week to learn safe cycling skills during group road, mountain bike, and tandem rides. CBC cyclists explored York County by bicycle, taking advantage of new trail systems and breaking personal mileage and fitness goals. Fifty kids pedaled nearly 10,000 cumulative miles during 79 bike rides. Seven kids reached the 500 Mile Club, three kids reached the 750 Mile Club, and one twelve-year old reached the 1,000 Mile Club and rode on to be the first member of the 2,000 Mile Club! A few kids learned how to captain tandems for their CBC friends during group rides. Girls’ Empowerment Group: The CBC’s all-girls bike riding club rode every Friday during its April- October season, averaging five girls per session. While pedaling nearly 2,500 cumulative miles, partici- pants connected with other girls and developed relationships with positive female role models in the community. Girls practiced bike repair skills learned during girls-only Bike Monkeys, cycled the 25 mile loop in the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Women’s Ride in Freeport, and overcame physical challenges during weekly bike rides. Sixteen girls and women learned how to responsibly build fires, explore tide pools, and kayak during the group’s third annual camping trip. Trek Across Maine Cycling Team: For the 12th consecutive year, our youth/adult charity cycling team trained, fundraised, and cycled in the 180-mile, three-day Trek Across Maine for the American Lung Association of New England. Ten kids and their mentors (four tandems, one quad bicycle, and four single road bikes!) completed the Trek along with 30 adult team members. The camaraderie of this diverse team contributed to improved healthy living habits, developing safe group cycling and bike repair skills, and promoted fundraising for this invaluable community organization. Since 2000, approximately 306 CBC team members have raised over $196,000 for lung health initiatives. * *CBC is a local Trips for Kids chapter THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU We hope the following words express our genuine thanks. Thank you to the volunteers, donors, and the Maine Department of Transportation for generously contributing your time, money, and skills to serve the developmental asset needs of kids in northern York County through the Community Bicycle Center. Volunteers and donors are the backbone of the CBC, without whom our lifeskills programs would not be possible. In 2011 alone, you helped us serve over 300 kids through our onsite programs and over 1,500 kids and families through our outreach efforts. Kids were more successful in relationships, in their families, during school and in our community because of you. Thank you!!!
