2. Codes (forms) and conventions are defined as "A
way of constructing meaning in media texts". They
can be split into two main categories; Technical and
Symbolic.
Technical: Detonations of the media. It is the literal
interpretation. It focus' on the equipment
and technology used to construct the meaning. For
example, camera angles and shots, editing
techniques such as fast paced shots and slow
motion shots, and sound such as diagectic /non-
diagectic.
Symbolic: Connotations of the media. These
translate signs to the means associated with it;
meanings that are not so obvious. For example,
Mise-en-scene and facial expressions from the
actors /singer in the video.
3. In general, I have challenged and developed many of the
codes and conventions of normal music videos, which have
been analysed by Andrew Goodwin. Goodwin is a theorist who
says that most music videos include a Star Image, Thought
Beats, and should have a performance and a narrative based
section in them.
I used the star image convention in terms of the main
character in my video is being used as the main singer in the
band Kodaline. This is shown by him being used on the front
cover of my Digipak as well. I also used thought beats to edit
each clip on the beat of the music. This helps the video to flow
better, and it's easier to watch without being distracted by the
editing. It can help the viewer to concentrate on the narrative
more, which is key for my video as the narrative is a strong
element and could be quite confusing if not understood
properly.
Initially I had decided to have no performance elements to my
video - purely a narrative based music video, but I did
research into some videos before I finalised my decision.
4. At first, I looked at Twin Atlantic's Hold On video. This
has both a narrative aspect and a performance aspect
that uses parallel editing. Most videos use this style and I
do really like it as it shows two different features within
the video to keep the active audience, so they do not
loose interest. I particularly liked in this example how the
narrative and the performance overlap at one point, as
you look over the shoulder of one of the band member's
playing his guitar, and you can see the narrative in the
background.
5. I also looked at Hozier's Take Me To Church,
which uses no performance aspects in the
video at all. It is a music video that is only
narrative based. This is also a hybrid
between music video and short film due to
the narrative nature of the video. However, I
think it works well and it is a very successful
music video.
Another real media text I looked at was Fall
Out Boy's Young Volcanoes. This video
incorporates the performance aspect within
the narrative. By this I mean the lead singer
is singing/ lip-syncing as a part of the
narrative. This has developed on from the
usual codes and conventions of music
videos, and I really liked this, and thought it
worked very well as a concept and so I
decided on doing the same in my own video.
This is a development from the standard
codes and conventions of the narrative and
the performance being two very separate
6. To begin with, I wanted my video to be in colour because most
music videos are, and I wanted to use colour specific enigma
codes within my video. For example, I had the protagonist
wear a red hoodie while filming because red symbolises love
and danger, which is exactly what his character is about. He's
so in love, he's dangerous. However, after viewing some black
and white real media texts, for example, Justin Timberlake's
Suit and Tie, The Neighbourhood's Sweater Weather, and
watching Hoziers' Take Me To Church, I decided to make my
music video black and white during post-production. I think
this looks a lot better, and it helps the audience the to
concentrate on the narrative.
7. In conclusion, I have developed and challenged many
conventions of music videos. However, due to my music
video being a hybrid between a music video and a short
film, I had to anchor is by using many normal
conventions such as thought beats and start image.
I think my video is very successful and is easily
recognisable as a music video.
