Ef fectiveness programme

 Helping organisations to:
 • document existing good practice
 • highlight areas for improvement
 • develop actions plans for these
 • share approaches to effectiveness
   and provide peer support

• Targeted at small organisations, but can
   be used by any
• MOT is freely available for all
• Full Assessment free to NIDOS Members
• Incorporates self-assessment process
   – not an audit tool

2 Stage process of
         assessment

• Stage 2: Full assessment

Both are self assessments by the organisation –
not an audit or external evaluation, but NIDOS
member organisations can get help with carrying
out self-assessments from NIDOS
Stage 1: MOT
4 Steps :
  1. Checking if your organisation’s mission is current
     and relevant
  2. Checking your organisation’s approach against
     the 10 Principles of good practice
  3. Checking your organisation’s fit with 17
     benchmarks of minimum standards of operation
  4. Drawing up a plan of action to tackle minimum
     standard areas which have been identified
     through MOT
Stage 2: Full Assessment
3 Steps:
1.Reviewing your organisation’s work strategy with its
mission (Weavers Triangle)
2.Checking your organisation’s fit with the full set of
benchmarks of good practice in relation to the
operational areas or principles
3.Drawing up a plan of action to tackle areas which
have been identified as needing improvement

Activity 1: Mission

In groups: discuss case study Mission and
look at the question prompts in the
guidance sheet

Agree a Mission statement
Activity 2: Principles
Whole workshop activity:
Star Exercise
Levels: 1 (weak) – 5 (strong)
Each person – put score on post-it
(Gut reaction – not in detail)
Activity 3: Benchmarks
Back in same small groups:
• Guidance on scoring benchmarks
Activity:
• Discuss and score the benchmark,
   using case study sheet information
• Identify indicators that are not met
   and need action
MOT Steps 3 and 4:
Step 3: Checking your organisation’s fit with
   17 benchmarks of minimum standards of
   operation
Step 4: Action planning to improve identified
   areas of weakness in these minimum
   benchmarks

  At MOT – mainly concerned with first two levels:
  1. Must Have: legal compliance / absolute
     basics
  2. Should Have: minimum level of basic good

  • 2. Aims of this Workshop  Help you understand the value and use of the new Effectiveness Toolkit  Support you to confidently use the MOT  Inform you of NIDOS support available  Get some initial feedback from you
  • 3. Introductions in pairs • Your name and your organisation • What do you hope the toolkit will do for your organisation? Please write your thoughts for second bullet on post-its (one item per post-it, if more than one)
  • 4. What is the NIDOS Ef fectiveness programme tr ying to achieve? Helping organisations to: • document existing good practice • highlight areas for improvement • develop actions plans for these • share approaches to effectiveness and provide peer support
  • 5. Main audience for ET • Targeted at small organisations, but can be used by any • MOT is freely available for all • Full Assessment free to NIDOS Members • Incorporates self-assessment process – not an audit tool
  • 6. Organisation benefits: • Improved work delivery – better results for communities: main aim of our work • Prioritised areas for improvement: where to start and minimum standards • Clearer communication of your mission: better fundraising and mobilising of further support • Strengthened demonstration, to supporters, of value for money and use of time

  • 8. 2 Stage process of assessment • Stage 1: MOT • Stage 2: Full assessment Both are self assessments by the organisation – not an audit or external evaluation, but NIDOS member organisations can get help with carrying out self-assessments from NIDOS
  • 9. Stage 1: MOT 4 Steps : 1. Checking if your organisation’s mission is current and relevant 2. Checking your organisation’s approach against the 10 Principles of good practice 3. Checking your organisation’s fit with 17 benchmarks of minimum standards of operation 4. Drawing up a plan of action to tackle minimum standard areas which have been identified through MOT
  • 10. Stage 2: Full Assessment 3 Steps: 1.Reviewing your organisation’s work strategy with its mission (Weavers Triangle) 2.Checking your organisation’s fit with the full set of benchmarks of good practice in relation to the operational areas or principles 3.Drawing up a plan of action to tackle areas which have been identified as needing improvement

  • 15. Stage 1: MOT reminder 4 Steps : 1. Checking if your organisation’s mission is current and relevant 2. Checking your organisation’s approach against the 10 Principles of good practice 3.   • 16. MOT: Case Study activities Roles in groups – Chair, board member, staff, 2 volunteers, partner Case study sheet 3 activities
  • 17. Activity 1: Mission In groups: discuss case study Mission and look at the question prompts in the guidance sheet Agree a Mission statement
  • 18. Activity 2: Principles Whole workshop activity: Star Exercise Levels: 1 (weak) – 5 (strong) Each person – put score on post-it (Gut reaction – not in detail)
  • 19. Activity 3: Benchmarks Back in same small groups: • Guidance on scoring benchmarks Activity: • Discuss and score the benchmark, using case study sheet information • Identify indicators that are not met and need action
  • 20. MOT Steps 3 and 4: Step 3: Checking your organisation’s fit with 17 benchmarks of minimum standards of operation Step 4: Action planning to improve identified areas of weakness in these minimum benchmarks At MOT – mainly concerned with first two levels: 1. Must Have: legal compliance / absolute basics 2. Should Have: minimum level of basic good
  • 21. Step 4: MOT Action Planning Level 1 - MUST HAVE Does SABS have a mission statement? Yes, so SABS meets the “Must Have” level So no actions needed at Must have
  • 22. Step 4: MOT Action Planning Should Have? The mission is not still relevant x It has not been reviewed recently x It is known about by trustees & volunteers √ They sometimes refer to the mission when making big decisions x
  • 23. Step 4: MOT Action Planning At Should Have – there are some indicators that are not ticked and so need action planning See handout for example action plan
  • 24. NIDOS suppor t  One-to-one support for member organisations with MOT.  Guidance/signposting to information to help organisations act on areas for improvement.  Mentoring.  Peer networking.  Other needed?
