Scenario
Dark Horse publishers have commissioned me to write and illustrate a graphic novel based on an original concept of
my choice. The genre will be fiction and story will be set in the 1900’s with a surreal, fantastical twist. I will include
real jazz singers in the story that either make an appearance or are more involved in the plot. I have decided the
main character will be a young Ella Fitzgerald ‘Queen of Jazz’, before her rise to fame, when she is struggling to be a
part of the music industry. The target audience would be comic and graphic novel fans, and jazz and blues music fans.
This means that the majority of people who would be interested in my work would probably be wide and varied in
age. Once complete the project will be a readable graphic novel of good quality. It will be hand drawn and then
scanned in so the finished pages can be uploaded online as well.
2. Task 1 – FMP Interview
• FMP interview, I will submit for an interview and be asked questions about the project I have chosen to
complete to establish my understanding of the role pre-production in the media production process,
and the purpose of research in the creative media industries (Deadline: Before Half Term)

profiles of specific target markets. I will carry out a study of buyer behaviour and attitude towards
different kinds of graphic novel and comics (hardback, softback, wire binders) I will evaluate current
trends and the most popular graphic novels, and research into advertising. This will include
quantitative research including sales numbers, ratings and views off and online; and also qualitative
research of reviews from professionals linked to the business (artists, cover designers, authors, and
conceptual artists) and fans. My initial research will include primary and secondary types of research,
the primary will be things carried out by myself such as interviews and questionnaires, studies and
observations, phone calls, emails, focus groups and audience panels. My secondary research focused on
the work others have done will include looking online, in books, magazines on websites
