Flyer with save the date for walk the world and Respect Diversity Foundation Gala where we hope to display the Roots and Fruits quilt Begin the session by inviting them to do one of the BE THE PEACE reflective cards activities that helps me focus and handle stress: 8 BREATHS.
  2. GIFT Thank you for the opportunity to share a wonderful gift called Shinnyo-en and their Six Billion Paths to peace initiative. The initiative simply asks us to be intentional in our daily acts of kindness and compassionate service. Through giving we grow and transform. Their 6bptp initiative is imbedded in one simple reflective statement and a question 6 billion paths to peace, what is yours? Introductions My name is Carmen Clay. I facilitate a service requirement for graduation at Casady School. I am a Spanish teacher by training. Dr. Clydia Forehand, my co-presenter, is handing brochures FYI about the Casady Service-Learning Program. Yo soy el otro tu, tu eres el otro yo. Henry Lozano, the Shinnyo-en foundation executive director, said at their last retreat, Yo soy el otro tu, tu eres el otro yo. Which means, I am the other you, you are the other me, a simple sentence that speaks volumes about our connectivity as humans.
  3. May Clydia and I invite you to stand up and find a partner.    Connecting Tell us how you found that partner. Now please listen to each other as you find 3 things you have in common and one in which you were different.  Groups, please share your findings. Building trust Now could you to face each other. Place your palms close, but not touching.  Close our eyes. Think about that space in between your palms; the space of our commonalities as humans, the space of our connectivity in peace, harmony, and trust.  With your eyes closed, please take turns describing to each other how that space feels. ("The space between our palms, at the retreat, felt warm, nurturing. and embracing."  )   Collaboration-LEADERSHIP CHANGES FOCUS AS NEEDED Now, one of you will become the leader of the group. The leader's task is to do an action the other member of the group would have to mimic.  The follower will mirror the leader.  Yo soy el otro tu, tu eres el otro yo. We are interconnected! (It was fun, warm, and silly at the same time.)  Now the leader will become the follower. The new leader’s task is to make a sculpture of the partner and freeze him or her in that pose ( I found out that my partner was a gardener, therefore, I froze her in a gardening pose.) Clydia or members of the team will tell what was observed in this process. Finally from a group of two, PLEASE EXPAND YOUR human connectivity and create groups of 4. The new team needs to assign numbers to each member from 1-4. Now that numbers have been assigned, here are the tasks; Please create a movement for the word assigned to you: Person #1: Give, (give time for them to create) Person # 2: Grow, Person# 3: Transform , Person #4: Create a transition for between the words.  (It was amazing what the groups created as they explored the mission of the Shinnyo-en Foundation.) Let them time to perform for each other and discuss the findings. If this is all we do, I will be happy. The rest could be for them to take and do at home.

  8. As I said before, 6bptp has taught me to seek collaborations with organizations that have similar mission. In June 2010, I attended an Educators’ summit at the Oklahoma National Memorial and Museum. I learned the role of random acts of kindness and service played in turning destruction and violence into hope from the words of survivors, family members, first respondents and our city as a whole. It is our life, our schools and our world, we are called 2 bring harmony and trust in humanity In a way the 6bptp and the Called2change initiative of the Oklahoma National Memorial Museum became my network of hope for a world at peace some day. Discovering local collaborators On August 6th, thanks to a generous donor, the Casady YAC had a Called2Change YAC Invitational. An intergenerational group of 19 people spent the day at the Oklahoma City Memorial Museum. We learned how our city overcame tragedy by focusing on the compassionate service of thousands of volunteers. We learned about the Called2change program. In September, the Middle Division advisory implemented a Called2change activity they called”Velvet and Sand Paper Words” which helped students understand the power of words to provide peace and balance or promote unhappiness and discord.

  13. I am only at the discovery stage of the possibilities of the Shinnyo-en Paradigm of Service. My students and I have investigated finding harmony within ourselves. You will experience the simple roots and shoots activity that opened my eyes to harmony within self through service. Alignment within oneself means bringing into harmony the mind – intellectual and cognitive thoughts and constructs; the heart – emotional and psychological aspect; and action – physical and tangible movements. Most of us can relate to the feeling in our gut when we are doing something (action) that we know we don’t agree with (mind). This is the feeling of being out of alignment . Through the process of conscious awareness, we correct the action, or we shift our way of thinking about the situation so that greater harmony , or alignment is created between our mind, our heart and our actions. The most essential element of this continual process is deep knowledge of oneself. Alignment between mind, body and heart is difficult but the reward of inner peace or harmony within once self makes a person be in constant state of reflection of actions and words. I often found myself re-aligning or re-adjusting due to my ego and insecurity escapades. I have nicknamed those moments of personal growth and transformation, my “shinnyo-en moments”. The alignment between communities or groups can be very challenging work.  It can be complex to bring about alignment.  On the other hand, alignment can be very simple when people remember the interconnectedness they share because of common core values.  We believe alignment is possible between communities when people focus on their shared core values . Knowing what you value, having a sense of your unique tendencies or patterns of behavior, and understanding some of the ways you get caught out of alignment are all very useful. With that knowing, as situations arise when you feel out of alignment, you can pause and take a moment to reflect upon what might be going on with your thoughts, emotions, or actions. Adjusting your mind, heart, and actions moment to moment is how you maintain alignment . Each individual has a mind, a heart and action.  To be in the greatest alignment, they must practice developing a good relationship among their own mind, heart and action and then they must be conscious of adjusting their thoughts, feelings and actions to be in harmony with others. Tensions, and challenges are periods of adjustment that yield greater harmony..
  14. Connecting exercise explanation Every 6bptp workshop and annual retreat I have attended begun by “my” picture being taken. I assumed it was something done in California, but after several times of doing the same exercise, I realized it is an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and then share who we are. The opportunity to read about each other a little bit connects us by finding similarities and inspire us to explore some of our differences. Time to glue pictures & Connecting walk Thank you for completing yours. Let’s take a few more minutes with this wonderful activity. After you are finished, please glue your picture to your profile. Then tape your profile on the giant post-it notes. Take a few minutes to get to know the other people in this workshop by reading a few profiles. (Allow 2 minutes for people to go around) Sharing connecting walk Invite them to go back to their seats and share what they found out in their connecting walk
  15. S-L AND SHINNYO-EN My professional connection with shinnyo-en- started as I searched for a methodology for the service program at Casady School. A way to invite students think about their growth as they spent time involved helping a community need with their gifts and academic preparation. I wanted more than hours for episodic volunteerism. I attended Project Zero, Teaching for Understanding 2000 at Harvard University and learned about the power of the arts to connect to higher level thinking. In 2006, I became a fellow for the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund. My students were interested in manga and anime as an innovative way to serve underserved children with something out of the box and that is why I applied. I had an amazing experience in Japan. Although, I did not learn much about manga and anime,-later on my connection to this aspect of Japanese culture came as a member of the Japan America Society- I was exposed to a system that expects students to serve their schools. Children clean their schools, serve the meals, and clean their bathrooms at the end of the day. There was a great deal of recycling, order, and the streets and taxis of Tokyo were immaculately clean. I also had my first formal exposure to Peace education and the lessons learned from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This amazing experience helped me get connected to the Shinnyo-en Foundation and choose their workshop at a National Service-Learning Conference. IPARC and 6BPTP The fundamental stages of service-learning, have changed several times in the past 10 years. The most recent updates call for, IPARC (Investigation, Planning, Action, Reflection, and Celebration of service through demonstration of learning) with youth voice and choice. IPARC takes a lot of time and re-structuring the way we deal with our curriculums. I had adopted what I could of the S-L methodology. The Casady service requirement program runs like an optional club, but I kept on searching for a better model at workshop conferences when intrigued by the title, Six Billion Paths to Peace, What is yours? And I guess somewhat influenced by my Japan experience, I entered my first Six Billion Paths to Peace workshop at the National Service-Learning Conference in 2006. Connections of random acts of kindness and service-learning 6bptp taught me creative, simple ways to help students focus on our connectivity as humans THROUGH SERVICE. They taught me to value and celebrate every act of service and volunteerism, not just pre-approved, pre-planned, with ongoing reflection and evaluation service. Their tenants remain as constant through the years as our desire for happiness. Their activities are simple, yet have great deal of research and thought. Their annual retreat in San Francisco is illuminating and reinvigorating to the servant soul. I learned the simple lesson of being MORE intentional about FOCUSING TIME AND ENERGY ON ADVOCATING AND CELEBRATING random acts of kindness and service AS PATHS TO more caring AND COMPASSIONATE communities. I LEARNED TO TRUST PEACE AT THE HEART OF SERVICE. I ALSO LEARNED THAT THAT CHANGE becoming PEACE does not happen overnight, BUT IF YOU PLANT THE SEED AND WATER IT, THE TREE OF INNER AND WORLD PEACE WILL GROW, maybe be not in my life time, but there is a huge ripple effect on compassionate service creating a kinder world. Collaboration with NMM-called2change Shinnyo-en also taught me that I cannot work alone. I have to be connected in a sustainable way to other individuals and organizations. I have many nonprofits wanting the students labor and time, but in 2010, Casady s-l/6bptp advocacy service initiative found a very special collaborator, the Oklahoma National Memorial and Museum,Called2Change initiative. Who I try to be now As a result, I work on a daily basis at finding balance, harmony, and trust in my relationships. I try to grow the number of daily actions of being an agent of peace over violence. It is not easy to subjugate my personal ego, but slowly I am learning how to get greater alignment between my mind, my heart, and my actions. If I want a world at peace someday it begins with me. I have chosen to be an agent of peace being the change I want to see if the world because WE ARE NOT BORN TO FOLLOW, WE GOT TO STAND UP FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE. Play part of Bon Jovi’s You tube video

  17. Exploration of the self is the most difficult, and yet the most accessible in this view of service.  Every individual can begin to explore one’s service. To begin this reflection process, imagine yourself as a tree.  The branches, leaves, flowers and fruit of the tree represent the outcomes of other-centered actions (in other words, service).  They represent the specific ways in which you bring greater joy , harmony and energy to the world.  Like many types of trees, we as people grow and blossom in different ways.  We are different sizes, we bloom at different times of the year, with varying growing periods and many different types of flowers and fruit.  Some have no buds and others take several seasons to bloom. The part of the tree that exists below the surface represents the inner dimensions of service – the attitudes, beliefs and values that root an other-centered approach to life.  Some of us have an extensive root structure, while others have a less complex version.  Some have root systems that are heavily interconnected to other trees, others stand seemingly alone.  These submerged, invisible dimensions of service are usually developed early in life through our experiences in our families, and religious, social, and cultural institutions.  Often, they are unconscious until something inspires us to investigate ourselves more deeply. The trunk of the tree represents the way in which the fruit and roots are connected.  Inside the trunk, sap flows from the root systems up to the most distant bud to feed its growth.  Our consciousness about the connections between our roots and fruit help us to act with purity and energy
  18. In the quilt patch you will be provided, with your pencil, please draw your PEACE tree It can be any kind of tree, as you can see in the students’ drawings.
  19. We have explored a few of the 6bptp activities. For our last activity, we will make patches for the back of this quilt created by Casady Students on MLK Day 2009.
