2. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
• The SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE is used to
express:
1- Habitual actions in the present:
a) I go to school every day.
b) My father works at a bank.
c) Classes in CEF 16 start at 13:15.
d) Isabella always watches tv.
3. 2- Universal truths and future planned
actions:
a) Birds fly.
b) The train leaves in ten minutes.
c) Babies cry.
d) Parallel lines never cross.
4. AFFIRMATIVE FORM
• In the SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE we only need to
take the TO and use the verb in its normal form.
Let’s conjugate the verb TO WALK.
I walk – Eu ando
You walk – Você anda
We walk – Nós andamos
You walk – Vocês andam
They walk – Eles/Elas andam
5. • In the 3rd person singular, we
need to flex the verb:
He walks – Ele anda
She walks – Ela anda
It walks – Ele/Ela anda.
6. FLEXING THE VERB IN THE 3rd
PERSON SINGULAR
1- Add ES when the verb ends with ss, sh, ch,
x, z and o. Examples:
TO KISS - BEIJAR
He kisses – Ele beija
She kisses – Ela beija
It kisses – Ele/Ela beija
7. TO WATCH - ASSISTIR
He watches – Ele assiste
She Watches – Ela assiste
It watches – Ele/Ela assiste
TO GO - IR
He goes – Ele vai
She goes – Ela vai
It goes – Ele/Ela vai
8. 2- When the verb ends with consonant + Y,
take the Y and add IES. Examples:
TO STUDY – ESTUDAR
He studies – Ele estuda
She studies – Ela estuda
It studies – Ele/Ela estuda
9. TO CRY - CHORAR
He cries – Ele chora
She cries – Ela chora
It cries – Ele/Ela chora
10. 3- Verbs with any other terminations,
including vowel + y, add only S. Examples:
TO DANCE – DANÇAR
He dances – Ele dança
She dances – Ela dança
It dances – Ele/Ela dança
11. TO STAY - FICAR
He stays – Ele fica
She stays – Ela fica
It stays – Ele/Ela fica

• TO BE, TO HAVE and THERE TO BE
don’t follow the rule described
above. They have different ways to
do the SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE.
13. One last important information
• The SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE always come
followed by FREQUENCY ADVERBS.
Examples:
always – sempre
every day – todos os dias
every week – toda semana
often – frequentemente
never – nunca
14. sometimes – às vezes
usually – normalmente
once a day – uma vez ao dia
seldom – raramente
rarely – raramente
twice a week – duas vezes por semana
every year – todos os anos
at night – à noite
in the morning – pela manhã
