Tongue Twisters  •Repetition 		      •Personification •Simile			     •Onomatopoeia •Metaphor
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition •Repetition is the act of repeating.  •Three forms we’re going to discuss are: 1. Alliteration  2. Assonance  3. Consonance
1. Alliteration  Alliteration is:  •The repetition of initial sounds.  •There must be at least 2 per row
Examples 1. Pretty Polly picked pears for preserves.  2. A pack of pesky pixies.  3. Sally sells seashells by the sea shore.  Find the alliteration: Harry helped hungry hippos.
2. Assonance  Assonance is: •The repetition of VOWEL sounds.  •Usually found in the middle of words.  Kateatethe whole cake.  The long “A” sound is being repeated.
3. Consonance  Consonance is:  The repetition of CONSONANT sounds.  Ben lent Ted a pencil.  The “eh” sound is being repeated.  **The sound is repeated, NOT the** letter!
Simile  A simile is:  •A comparison between unlike things using:  1. like  2. as 3. as though  •Similes are a way to describe something.
Examples  1. Fits like a glove  2. Runs like a deer 3. Eyes like a hawk.  4. Cute as a button. 5. Pretty as a picture  THESE ARE SIMILES!
Metaphor  A metaphor is:  •A comparison where one thing is said to be another.  •Most often, it compares two unlike things.  -Life is a rollercoaster ride.  -He has a heart of stone.  -Time is money  These are metaphors!
Activity! 1.Find a partner  2.Choose two things to be compared 3.Create your own metaphor Then….. 4.Draw a picture to represent your metaphor.
Personification Personification is:  •Giving human characteristics to animals or objects.  -The camera loved her.  -The flowers begged for water.  -Lightning danced across the sky.
Onomatopoeia  Onomatopoeia is: •The use of words that imitate sound.  -The fire crackled. -The bee buzzed loudly. -The egg sizzled on the stove.
Personification or Onomatopoeia?  1. The spaceship leapt into the sky. 2. The soda fizzled as she opened it.  3. Beep! Beep! went the alarm clock.  4. The wind whispers in the night.
Where will we see these devices?  •Poems  •Books •Clichés/Phrases  ALL WRITING!!!
Activity!  1. Draw a picture. 2. Personify that picture.  Then…..  4. Create your own tongue twister. 5. Make sure to use 2 literary devices.
