o Diegem/Brussels airport region
4. GIFT-T!
Green Infrastructure for Tomorrow -Together!
In order to:
Increase the pace of planning prosperous, green and socially
engaged regions
We intend to:
Improve green infrastructure
Based on:
A shared vision of regional shareholders (communities, businesses
and administrative bodies) for the area’s cohesion and growth

10. Selecting valuation approaches
• Scale
• Stakeholder involvement
• Time constraints
• Valuation stage/ the role of valuation in the planning
process
11. Hoo Peninsula: context
• The Hoo Peninsula is threatened by the construction of the Thames
Estuary Airport.
• The purpose of the case study is to engage all stakeholders of the
Peninsula within a common project, as an alternative to the airport: from its
planning to its delivery and management
• The case study leader organised “community conversations” which intend
to capture the desires and needs of the community. The valuation has
been based on results from these meetings.
12. The Hoo Peninsula:
Who has been interviewed?
Local authorities
Visitors
Community groups
Residents
13. How were they interviewed?
Data collection method
• Onsite data collection (visitors)
• Door-to-door data collection (residents)
• Fixed appointments (local authorities, community
groups)
Face-to-face
• Online questionnaires designed for organisations
members and residents of the case study
• It purpose is to complement the face-to-face data
collection; people may fill the questionnaire at a
convenient time for them
• Once developed, less human resources are required
to collect data
Online
questionnaire
14. Main focus of the valuation
1. Stakeholders relationship with the green infrastructure:
perceptions and behaviours, for instance:
• Importance of GI
• Purpose of visits
• Frequency of visits
• Identified issues of the GI
• Favourite spots and why
15. 2. Economic valuation
• Travel cost method
Attractiveness of the GI
• Choice between 3 scenario designed
based on community conversations
• Themes of scenarios: agriculture, energy
production, recreation
Choice modelling
Main focus of the valuation
16. Diegem/Brussels Airport region: context
• The case study is highly urbanised
• Many types of stakeholders are sharing a relatively small
area: employees, joggers, bikers, nature lovers, people in
search for some peace and quiet, business people
• Strong importance of businesses (many large ones) and
farmers (generally land owners)
• VLM has already develop the planning of this area based on
a participative approach. Together with all stakeholders of
the area, they want to validate this vision and promote
engagement for GI improvement

Valuation tools Evelyne
- valuation tools for the toolbox
- valuation to interest businesses to participate in GIFT-T!
Dans un premier temps
What we utitimately intend to do:
We focus on deliverbility, broker new relationships and attract new funding for GI
We must foster a business sector engaged in delivering GI as foundation for prosperity
We develop a share view of an area’s cohension and growth, identifuing reql implementqtion of GI by levering in new funding streams
We must keep in mind that we intend to:
Based on:
Deliver a program of innovative actions that increases the pace and certainty of planning prosperous, green and socially engaged regions.
Develop an integrated approach combining a strategic planning and creation of green infrastructures
Define a shared vision
Transform “stakeholders into shareholders”
Attract new investors from the private sector
Developed a methodology applicable within different environmental cultural and juridical contexts.
The economic valuation may serve different purpose of the GIFT-T phases: provide insights on the relationship between stakeholders and the GI, provide information of the spatial scenario comparison and provide information to dissimilate within the business plan to attract investment and further engagement.
One must note that the valuation may be adapted to the stage of development of the case study:
one questionnaire, may serve many purposes, example of Hoo Peninsula
The CBP valuation approach is rather theoretical, and it is based on an ideal state of CBP,
So how to integrate the valuation process in different planning route in each cases?
Dans un premier temps
Cases are encourage to take both appraches. However, the importance of the approach depends on the case particularities. For instance;
This area demonstrates most of the issues that have an impact on how communities work to plan and delivery a sustainable environmental, economic, social future. This future is importance to the 20,000 residents of the Peninsula, plus the numerous local, National and International business and wildlife interests co-located here
Most ecosystem services benefit a large variety of actors, directly or indirectly
What measure?
Travel cost – attractiveness of the site, how: travel cost
Avoid cost – cost avoided by commuting via the green infrastructure
: in the area between the airport of Zaventem and Evere, and in the area around the Researchpark in Zellik. The actions to strengthen the landscape will be to the benefit of a broad spectrum of stakeholders: residents, employees, joggers, bikers, hikers, nature lovers, people in search for some peace and quiet, business people, … in short: for the benefit anyone young or old who wants to enjoy the unique landscape qualities of this strategic area
