3. Thai classical music is synonymous with those stylized court ensembles and repertoires that emerged in its
present form within the royal centers of Central Thailand some 800 years ago. These ensembles, while being
deeply influenced by Khmer and even older practices and repertoires from India, are today uniquely Thai
expressions.

4. Traditional Thai classical repertoire is anonymous, handed down through an oral tradition of
performance in which the names of composers (if, indeed, pieces were historically created by single
authors) are not known. However, since the beginning of the modern Bangkok period, composers'
names have been known and, since around the turn of the century, many major composers have
recorded their works in notation. Musicians, however, imagine these compositions and notations as
generic forms which are realized in full in idiosyncratic variations and improvisations in the context of
performance.
5. A distinctive Thai culture did not exist until 1257, when the kingdom of Sukhothai was created. Music was
an important part of life during this period, and what is now known as Thai classical music arose during
the Ayuthaya period. Music flourished for the next few centuries, in spite of occasional oppression from
monarchs like Rama.

7. The Jakhay has been used since at least the first part of the Ayuthaya period (c.1357 A.D.-B.E.
1900), but it appears that it has been used in the string ensemble only since the time of King
Ramal (1782-1809). It is a plucked zither. Its highest two strings are made of silk yarn or nylon
and lowest is made of brass. The instrument has a buzzing sound because the strings are
raised just off the flat bridge by a sliver of bamboo or other thin material such as plastic.
8. The khong wong lek is a gong circle used in Thai classical music. It has 18 tuned bossed gongs, and is smaller
and higher in pitch than the khong wong yai. Both instruments are played in the same manner, the khong wong
lek plays a faster and more ornate variation on the principal melody, with less use of two-note chords. Mainly used
in funeral music.
9. Thai instrumental ensembles use several different types of gong but one of
the most common is the Khaw-ng Mong. Like many words in the Thai
language the sound of the object has an influence on the name. In older times
drums and the Khaw-ng were used to announce the time of day and night.
Usually the gong in the day time and the drum at night.
10. A gourd mouth organ is a traditional wind instrument found
in many nations of East and Southeast Asia. It is to similar
the Chinese sheng but with a windchest made from a dried
bottle gourd rather than metal or wood. Its pipes (often five
in number) are made of bamboo and it has free reeds that
may be made of bamboo or metal. In Thailand (where it is
called naw among the Lahu, lachi among the Akha, and fulu
among the Lisu), Open holes on the bottom of the pipes in
some gourd mouth organs allow for the bending of tones.

12. The khene is a mouth organ of Lao origin whose pipes, which are usually made of
bamboo, are connected with a small, hollowed-out hardwood reservoir into which air is
blown, creating a sound similar to that of the violin. Today associated with Laos and
Northeast Thailand, similar instruments date back to the Bronze Age of Southeast Asia. The
most interesting characteristic of the khene is its free reed, which is made of brass or silver.
13. Mythological origin
According to Lao legend, the khene was created by a woman who was trying to reproduce the sound of the garawek bird which she
heard while on a walk one day. The journey was long and difficult, so she decided to invent an instrument that would bring the sound
to her. When she returned to her village, she experimented with many different instruments, including percussion, wind and plucked
and bowed strings. Finally she cut a piece of bamboo and inserted a reed into it. Upon playing it, she realized that it sounded much
like the garawek bird. She continued to improve the sound until she felt it was worthy for the king's ears. When she was ready, she
went to the palace and began playing for the king on her newly invented instrument, which was at this point nameless. At the end of
the first song, she asked the king if he liked the piece. He said it was fair, and instructed her to continue playing. After her last song,
she again asked the king if he was pleased. His reply was "Tia nee kaen dae," which means "This time it was better." He then
instructed her to call the instrument, according to his words: “the kae”.
14. The Klui (or khlui) flute is one of the most common Thai wind instruments. In early times
the khlui was made from bamboo. Most modern instruments are made from hardwood.
After cutting and hollowing , the instrument is carefully dried out over a fire. On the front
side, small , round holes are drilled in a row over which the fingers are placed, lifting the
fingers from the holes creates the different musical pitches for the flute. No reed is
used, the mouthpiece consists of a piece of wood. instrument requires great skill in
playing.
15.
16. The Pi Saw unlike the klui is made from a long and slender piece of bamboo. The actual length of this
instrument can vary depending on the pitch desired. Some musicians can carry a set of 5 to 7
instruments. Being basically a long piece of bamboo the instrument is fairly easy to construct. A piece
of bamboo is selected of the right length and the obstructing sections are hollowed through so as to
make one long tube. In the head ( the mouth piece end of the flute) is inserted a piece of metal reed
made of brass or silver.
17. The ching is basically a pair of small cymbals, each one made of thick metal
shaped like a small cup. Played by hitting them together the sound that emit is
a very high pitched crisp metal sound. At the bottom of each cymbal cup is a
small hole through which is passed the connecting string. The strings role is
for convenience only and helps to hold them in playing position.
juego.
18. The sueung is made from one piece of hardwood, including neck and pegbox. The
body is hollowed out and covered with another (round) piece of hardwood, with a
small soundhole in the middle. The neck is rather square. It has high wooden frets
attached (nailed) to it, in oriental scale (7 frets to an octave). The pegbox is open
and a bit sickle-shaped. The four round friction pegs are two on each side. They
run over a loose wooden bridge to pins at the end of the body. The body of the
sueng is decorated with woodcarvings around the edges. A plectrum is fixed with a
rope to the end of the body.

20. The chap are a flat round Thai cymbal with a rounded knob in the center. This cymbal has wider
and thinner metal than the ching. The center bulge is about 2cm in diameter and the flat outer
rim extends a further 2.5 cm. Each cymbal has a cord fastened through a hole in the top of the
knob, often with a tassel or fancy decoration on the end. The two halves are not fastened
together as are the ching.
21. the sound bord is made from a coconut shell that is covered on the open front by cow skin. The saw u is held
vertically and has two silk strings that are played with a bow. The bow is between the strings and the player tilts the
bow to play each string. The bow is made out of horse tail hair. The saw u can be played as a solo instrument in
some cases but is mainly used for the backbone in some ensembles because of its rich, dark, and mellow tone.
The sound is more fit for those types of songs rather than fast paced melodies.
22. This instrument was introduced to Thailand and Cambodia from China. The khim produces a significantly softer
sound. Traditional khims have two bridges, though in the late 20th century some players began using larger
instruments with more bridges.

resonator, and is played with two mallets. The hard mallets create the sharp bright sound when they keys are hit.
The hard mallets are used for more faster playing. The soft mallets create a mellow and more softer tone which
is used for slower songs. Ranat ek bars are typically made from rosewood, although in rare instances
instruments with bamboo bars can be found. Some players are able to play two instruments at the same time,
placed at right angles to each other.

27. In older Thai literature an instrument called the Sa Phon is mentioned. Historians believe this to be the older version of the
Thai style drum the Ta Phon. The body of the drum is shaped like a barrel. It is played with both hands using the palms
and fingers. The edge of the heads are sewn with twisted strands of cane, then leather strips are pulled through the loops
of cane on both ends. Around the center of the drum more strips are woven to form a pattern. This part of the drum is
called rat ok . The Ta Phon is a rhythm instrument used in the Pi Phat ensemble.
